Overall. Really solid deal. 5 years is perfect IMO and a 2.5m a year raise. Right on the mark.
I like it for WPG. Trouba and Ladd my be goners though.

Does this take the Jets out of the Hamonic discussion?

That's a hefty deal, but it makes sense for them.
I doubt he would have got that anywhere else though.

No wonder he looked so relaxed fighting for the puck along the wall.

Edmonton must be panicing a little, as the crop of good free agent defensemen will start to dry up.
With Buff off the table the defenseman that stand out would be Seabrook, Yandle and Johnson, and I don't think that Yandle is what the oilers need, the Hawks will try to sign Seabrook and Colorado would be foolish to let Johnson go.
Hamhuis is another guy that will probably hit the market, but there should be some pretty fierce competition to get him.

seabrook and johnson both have been extended already

no it makes them more likely in since trouba might be demanding too much money so they might deal him.

Pretty hefty AAV, but really like the term for the Jets ... anything over 5 would have been a huge risk. Solid deal.
No way they re-sign Ladd now IMO.

Alright value (to me it is an overpayment but it's what he would get on the open market), and not terrible term but he will be 31 at the start of the contract and I worry about how he will age.
This is a guy that can already have problems controlling his weight and it has led to some issues in the past.
Will that really get better into his 30s?
Issue really is the Jets had to do it. If they would have let both Ladd and Byfuglien walk then they would have been in trouble with that fanbase who is starting to lose patience.
Think they are smart to stay away from Ladd for big money long term though. Guy is starting to reach the point in his career where guys who play his style of game start to break down (see. Dustin Brown, Mike Richards).

I take Gio at 6.75M for 6 years before I take Byfuglien at 7.6M for 5 years, comparable signings though. Very notable premium to keep the deal to 5 years.

So the one less year on the term cost them $850,000.00 per year vs. Giordano's contract.
Also have to account for the fact that he's around a year and a half younger, though.

He could have gone anywhere he wanted and made a crap ton of money. But he chose Winnipeg.
Thats gotta be a win no matter how you slice it.
Also, I have seen that gif a gazillion times. Its everywhere. I just realized that it was Iggy he pushes away at the end.

For a big man he has some pretty pure talent. If he takes care of himself there's no reason he can't be productive over the term.

Good deal for both sides, only concern is how is weight holds him back into his mid-30s.

I don't like that contract for that player as I don't think he's a $7 million defenseman and his weight problems worry me. However I think it's a good signing for the Jets as they had plenty of cap room to spare and letting all your top players walk away as UFA sends a bad message to fans when you are a team that has one of the lowest payrolls in the league.

Its a good statement that they can keep their guys...not sure this is gonna work out though. They are already an average at best team and will likely lose other guys with their budget.
