Jets Re-Sign Dustin Byfuglien $7.6m AAV x 5 years.
Darren Dreger @DarrenDreger 2m2 minutes ago
Byfuglien extension imminent. Negotiations heated up this weekend. Expect announcement shortly.
EDIT: Bob McKenzie @TSNBobMcKenzie 1m1 minute ago
$7.6M x 5 for Byfuglien with WPG.
I'm kind of shocked, I thought for sure Buff would bolt from the Peg. Good for the team and the City.

They pretty much had to but I don't see how this contract is not going to be bad. Anything over 3-4 years is playing with fire as big guys rarely age well into their mid 30s.

Meh, he was going to over 4 years anywhere he signed.

This right here. He's not going to age well unless he does a complete about face and dedicates himself to dropping 20-30lbs.

I assume that means Ladd is going to be either a deadline deal or a UFA or both.

7 years 7.5 would be my guess.
It takes him to 38.
Edmonton must be panicing a little, as the crop of good free agent defensemen will start to dry up.
With Buff off the table the defenseman that stand out would be Seabrook, Yandle and Johnson, and I don't think that Yandle is what the oilers need, the Hawks will try to sign Seabrook and Colorado would be foolish to let Johnson go.
Hamhuis is another guy that will probably hit the market, but there should be some pretty fierce competition to get him.

Doesn't mean it will be a good deal. 8 x7.5m is the doomsday scenario for Winnipeg.

Seabrook just recently signed a huge extension with Chicago.

Yeah, I'm thinking this spells the end of Ladd.

Actually not too bad. 4 years would've been better obviously but they pretty much had to. I thought Buff would've pushed for a longer deal, especially given what Gio got. Being a UFA at 35 might not go so great for him.

So that leaves Yandle, Johnson, Campbell, Hamhuis as the guys that standout on defense as UFAs
I suppose the Oilers could go the RFA route, but that rarely works out.
