Western & Eastern Conference wild card races
It was exactly 1 year ago that Jets4life created the western conf wildcard thread. Here we go again as most teams have hit the midway point of the season. Sit back for now as the turbulence is mild. The ride should be bumpier and wild when March arrives.
1. Minnesota (22-12-8) 22 ROW, 52 pts
Arizona (21-16-4) 21 ROW, 46 pts--second in the Pacific Division
2. Nashville (19-16-7) 17 ROW, 45 pts
3. Colorado (21-19-3) 21 ROW, 45 pts
Vancouver (16-16-10) 13 ROW, 42 pts--third in the Pacific Division
3. Anaheim (17-17-7) 15 ROW, 41 pts--fourth in the Pacific Division
4. Winnipeg (19-20-3) 19 ROW, 41 pts
5. San Jose (19-18-2) 18 ROW, 40 pts--fifth in the Pacific Division
6. Calgary (19-19-2) 18 ROW, 40pts--sixth in the Pacific Division
7. Edmonton (17-23-3) 14 ROW, 37 pts--seventh in the Pacific Division
There are 2 wildcard playoff spots available. Teams in the smaller font are in a playoff spot because they are in either 2nd or 3rd place in their division.

I hadn't noticed that NSH has come back to the pack...tied with Colorado now, ouch.
How the heck is PHX doing so well?...they have the weakest roster in the league, I think. Well coached, I guess??? I haven't watched any of their games.

Dave Tippet gets the best out of his players. The boring system they play wins hockey games.

Time for everyone to flip out again!
At this point, though, that model should basically be described as a "best guess".

Oh god not this again. Seriously man, can you start a new thread with that chart so this thread doesn't rack up 10+ pages of shot attempt differential debate?

Let's compare some prediction methods from last season.
Corsi-Predicted teams in order of probability to make it, February 10th 2015. which was the first day such a prediction was posted in last years version of this thead.
Teams in red actually made it.
NSH (100%)
ANA (99.9%)
STL (99.6%)
CHI (98.1%)
VAN (78.4%)
WPG (77.7%)
LA (69%)
SJ (65.9%)
MIN (41.1%)
DAL (37.8%)
CGY (31%)
COL (1.5%)
ARI (0.1%)
EDM (0.0%)
Same list, but in order of actual standings Feb 10th 2015:
NSH (78 pts)
ANA (75)
STL (74)
CHI (69)
WIN (66)
SJ (63)
CGY (63)
VAN (61)
MIN (59)
LA (58)
DAL (58)
COL (55)
ARI (47)
EDM (39)
Same list again, but in order of goal difference:
CHI (+38)
STL (+35)
NSH (+33)
CGY (+17)
ANA (+10)
VAN (+6)
WIN (+6)
SJ (E)
MIN (-1)
LA (-1)
DAL (-4)
COL (-15)
ARI (-54)
EDM (-60)
To sum up:
Corsi-predictions at best told us nothing that wasn't already apparent from the actual standings. You'd have been better off just watching the standings. Goal differentials were almost exactly on the money in both conferences. (In the other conference the 9th team Ottawa eventually made it and the 8th team Boston dropped out.)
The teams with the highest goal differential in their conference also made the Stanley cup final, and the team with the highest goal differential eventually won the championship.
Time to bet money on Capitals beating the Stars for the 2016 championship.

Or better yet just leave the Corsi garbage out of everything as it has the ability to predict the square root of f all.

Flames are now 4-6 in their last 10. They need to pick it up if they're going to have a shot at making it in. At the moment they're in line for a top-5 pick.

The winning streak is starting to feel a bit like last year's losing streak - an anomaly.

Don't kid yourself. The Coyotezzzz are still by far the most boring team in the NHL.

I know this is the west playoff race thread, but holy cow is Washington ever pulling away from the pack in the East. 7 points ahead of the West-leading Stars with a game in hand.
Caps are:
2nd in GF
1st in GA
+52 goal differential (1st in NHL)
and only 7 regulation losses.
Holtby, Ovi, Backstrom & Kuznetsov playing amazing. Adding Mr Game 7 to the roster might help them finally beat the Rangers in game 7. That matchup is basically guaranteed to happen haha.

While I agree the coyotes are snooze worthy, to me the Ducks have taken control of most boring team as of late. They're better to watch at home but their road games(and not just the last one against CGY) have been unwatchable. It's such a shame because they have some great talent.
I shudder to think what a coyotes and ducks playoff series would look like.

As opposed to who? The Flames???
The NHL as a whole is boring these days (Outside of Alex Ovechkin)
Anyways, definitely liking our position this year than last.

IMO the Coyotes haven't been boring at all this year relative to the rest of the league. The Ducks I agree have been awful to watch.
