Default Commute Time

So in reading the thread about the ctrain accident this morning, it brought to mind an article I read the other day. Sadly, I can't recall where I read it (likely one of the two newspapers) but it's main point was that the average commute time in Calgary was about an hour (one way).

Now, my commute is an hour and a half, but a lot of that involves bad transit connections, so it's only about an actual hour of travelling. I thought my commute was abnormal until I read that and started asking around. Seems that among my friends, an hour or so commuting isn't that out of the ordinary after all.

So, how long is your commute? While a commute is generally a large factor in choosing a living space, do you feel it would ever be a sole factor? Have you turned down a job (or a living space) because it was just too far from you? Would you?

My commute is about 5-10 minutes. On the way to work I don't have to go through any traffic lights. It is pretty awesome. I also don't have to pay for parking.

When the weather is really bad it might take me up to 15 minutes to get into work.

MAN I hope we don't change EPCs and I have to go work downtown. That would suck ass.

About 10 feet and the time it takes to take a whiz.

Taking transit to work is a pain for me. When I do, I drive to the Park 'N Ride in Coventry, take the 301 to Chinatown. That takes about 45 mins. And then I have to walk 15 mins to 11th Ave in the Beltline area. 1 hour is okay suppose, but that 15 min walk through -30 weather can be pretty brutal.

Or instead I can get in my car, drive for 20 mins and park 1/2 block from my office. Yeah I like that idea much more.

Takes me about a half our there, 45 minutes back. Not bad for basically driving 3/4 of the way across the city.

No wonder you said in the other thread you consider driving as a fun thing to do.

And I don't mean that as a slight at all.

Oh it definitely is part of it. You don't need a car here, so I only use it for fun....trips out of the city etc. It's actually kind of a giant pain in the dick to have one, so i better like driving!

10min...5min drive to the Ctrain and 5min ride downtown (at 715am). I could walk downtown in 40min and a bike ride is ~15min.

I love living in West Hillhurst. I would seriously kill myself if my commute was an HOUR each way. That is about 30 days of awake time a year spent on a bus/ctrain/car...barf...

15-20 min walk from house to office.

Used to be a 40-50 min bus ride. Major factor in our decision to move into the core.

Same for me. Working out of a home office is great. It sure saves on gas and milage on vehicles.

I'm about 30 minutes door to door, 35 if we stop for coffee. Of course on winter/blizzard days it can hit an hour.

My commute is pretty much glenmore to blackfoot and blackfoot to inglewood.

Live in the west and its ~20ish usually into work DT, 30-40 home. Hopefully that reduces when the WestLRT goes into service.

Any longer and I'd probably hang myself or die from rage.

Don't understand people who live in the deep south and commute an hour+ to work each day.

I think there was a thread a long while back but I'll put the same personal rant here.

People are either lying sacks of poo or have no concept of measuring time properly when it comes to their commute times. People will claim times of 10-15 minutes from the deep south or the far north into downtown. Of course, this is physically impossible even at 3:30 am - not to mention people losing their legs at that time in the morning.

In particular, it seems from personal experience that people who live in Mckenzie Towne tend to always to say "15 minutes, tops."

Door to door is all that counts; hell you should even include the time it takes you drive in circles in the parking lot to find a spot for the day.

15-20 minutes. I haven't taken transit (except on really rare occasions) for about 10 years now. I don't mind not working downtown since I'd rather drive than take transit, plus I get free parking at my work.

15-20 minutes...never hit rush hour. Though I'm always going the opposite of the rush so that's nice.

15-20 minutes one way depending on if I hit traffic lights. 30 minutes if Deerfoot is being moody. 45 minutes when I bike.
