It's been hinted that if Backlund doesn't make the NHL, then he will likely play in Sweden.

I think Negrin (if elligible) and Irving will be in the AHL next season.

Negrin is 19 - he's going back to junior

Thanks. I wasn't sure how that worked.

Would it be unusual for his junior team to willingly relinquish his rights so that he could turn pro?

I believe under the NHL/CHL operating agreement, players have to be 20 before they're allowed to play in the AHL (unless they're not part of the CHL).

I think the rule is you have to be 20 or have played 4 seasons ala Jason Spezza, because he played in the AHL at 19 yrs of age.

I was just wondering if it ever happens that a 19 year old junior player signs a pro contract and their junior team gives up their rights to the player, thus canceling the players CHL affiliation.

I'm guessing that it never happens.

Players that sign pro contracts are impact junior players. I doubt any team would want to just let a star player walk away for nothing with one year of junior eligibility left.

Will this thread be moved to the main forum today?

Eric Nystrom - should be back
Curtis McElhinney - I could see him back
David Hale - not needed
David VanderGulik - my darkhorse pick to win a job in Calgary
Brandon Prust - good enough for the A'
Brent Krahn - Looks like this could be it this time
Adam Pardy - should be re-signed
Derek Couture - doesn't seem to matter
Cam Cunning - still has time
Ryan Donally - still has time
Tomi Maki - would like to see a return only if he makes the NHL Flames
Grant Stevenson - would rather the kids be the go to guys on offense
Eric Godard - if no other options, I wouldn't mind him re-signed for another year.

Most teams announced all their QOs yesterday. I wonder what's holding Calgary up.

This article says who the Flames qualified. I am disappointed they didn't qualify Ryan Donally.

As of today I essentially see 41 SPC's already in place for next year, of the 50 available spots. Most recent activity being Conroy, Nystrom, Langkow and McElhinney signings, Warrener bought out, Prust, Pardy, Van Der Gulik not actually signed but qualified, Giordano to sign next week.

Freeway, two other guys who have contracts, one obviously being in violation: Daniel Ryder. The other being Brad Cole. Am I wrong about that?

I think Bam Bam will get his chance and will make of it what he can. A lot more jam than Maki, and all things being equal, that's probably where it sits.

Seems like there's lots of room for Sutter to sign a few graduating juniors or College players as he's done in the past.
