Default Brett Sutter

does anyone know how Brett Sutter' s first season in the ahl went? how many years till he will be ready to maybe take on that 3rd or 4th line role for the flames? i know keenan thought alot of him during the training camp last year which is why he jumped to the ahl.

The short, "I have been drinking for hours and just got home" answer is that he was the most improved player, in my opinion, this season.

The long answer will have to wait until tomorrow.

i think the answer you will probably get will be that he looked out of place early in the year and didn't necessarily belong on the team, but that towards the end of the season he looked much better.

personally, i didn't mind him as much early in the year. there were certainly plenty of players this year that played some bad and inconsistent hockey. i do agree that he improved a lot over the season. did he become one of the best players? not really, but much more of a contributor. certainly he's not out there scoring tons of goals, so he would fit into that lower line role of energy or penalty kill time. but whether he can get to that level for an nhl team, idk.

thats my thoughts. i will let DS take it from here, he is much more eloquent in his evaluations.

I have NO idea how he played this season but am wondering, it sounds like he might be the type of player (from Keenan or Sutter's perspective - based on my thoughts of their actions thus far) that sees the game well and knows where to be on the ice and why, even if he is a bottom 6 player skill wise (in both the AHL and NHL).

Versus sometimes the higherend skill guys that are great in the minors (top line) but do not make such solid decisions under NHL-level pressure?

I agree with DS about Sutter being the most improved player. Without a doubt!

I ragged on him constantly at the beginning of the season....his mistakes were extremely obvious and he never seemed to be in the right place at the right time. If I had a quarter for every time I said he should be sent to Vegas....

Then it was like he suddenly "got it"....though I'm not sure how it happened. He was hitting, scrambling in the corners, playing in front of the net, actually scoring, assisting on goals, and making valuable contributions. By the end of the season, he had become one of my team favorites, and definitely my favorite rookie. Not a superstar, but a guy who was a positive addition, who could be counted on to work hard and not make a ton of mistakes.

A couple of things that stand out about Sutter. Off the ice, he's a great kid. Funny, personable, gracious....awesome to have around. And during pre-game warmups he was always, and I do mean ALWAYS, the last guy to leave the ice....and always after the buzzer. He was out there working his tail off, trying to improve.

I'd say he needs another year or so, but with the progress that he's made so far, who knows??

I can say he is like Nystrom is to Calgary at this moment.

Alot of husle hits everything in sight and is our best PK'er.

Give him another year possibly 1 1/2 years and he might be up for a bit.

So we could have the start of a "2nd-gen line"?!

Wrong position, but Pelech's uncles, Paul and Mike Gillis, together have about 20 years in the NHL....

Paul coached the QC Mallards for four years in two stints.

Claeren.
Colton Gilles would look good on that wing. All three related to key parts of the Islanders Dynasty.
