This is terrible news for sure - my thoughts go out to the crew, passengers, and their families. It appears that the situation was due to weather in the area....

On-going news updates from Telegraph.co.uk are here:

Latest update:

13.57 An Algerian aviation official has told Reuters the plane has crashed.
No more details are currently available on the location, but Niger security sources say planes are flying over its border with Mali to search for the plane.

The same thing that goes on with planes every year?

Anyway, CNN executives must be doing a fist pump right now.

There hasn't been this many crashes since the 90s.

Sure there has:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...rcial_aircraft

Three crashes inside of a week is pretty damned unusual. But in 2011, for instance, there were six accidents involving planes carrying at least 50 passengers by the end of July.

And people wonder why I have a fear of flying. Yes, yes, it's the safest means of transportation.

I was going to edit and say, not this many large crashes with huge casualties since 911.

That is true. MH17 was, I believe, the largest single death toll in an aviation incident since 9/11. It has certainly been a tragic week.

is it time for an an "ongoing" thread? hopefully, they can find the plane and it survivors.

It would be interesting to see some stats on all of the worlds airlines and the number of crashes per million miles flown.

Yeah me too. I totally get it's not rational as a result of statistics ... I don't care. I can survive a car accident, it's pretty damn unlikely you survive a plane crash.

I'd prefer to take a means of transport where fatalities are met with shock rather than deemed acceptable loss.

I look at that list and only see 2 major airliner type disasters for all of 2011 and both were far less people than the crashes this year. This year definitely seems an abnormality in terms of large airliner/multiple fatality type crashes.

I love flying. Still do. This trend doesn't change that. And I like to go to exotic locations.
