Also passed on my first try although it was a year or so before GDL came into effect.

I should have technically failed my first attempt, but was given a break by the lady doing the test. I'm guessing because my test had to be rescheduled as it had been double booked. But she straight up told me "I should fail you for that" and didn't. So lucky me.

Me, too.
My wife's friend totaled the car during her test. Pretty sure that was an automatic fail She got her license in her 30's.

Passed my first try and did it in one of these:
Was a pretty small place though, like 5 sets of lights on main street, so less other stuff to distract and could focus on driving.

I was going to fail, slipped the guy $50, and suddenly parallel parking an Escort for 10 minutes was no longer a problem.
Thank you, Asian Driving School Inc.!

I failed the written test because I didn't even bother to read the little book till about 5 minutes before the test. Really stupid of me.
The driving test I got right the first time.

Instructors like this should be fined or punished in some way. We take driving here way too casually. The gear-grinder thread would go out of business if we had more stringent driver education.

I failed my first attempt here for undue care in uncontrolled intersection and stopping to close to the car in front of me at a light. My bad for assuming I could come to a new country and know all the local rules LOL. Aced the second attempt knowing the rules haha. (Also passed the 1st time back home all those years ago).

Still remember how nervous I was doing the parallel park. Still the second best parallel park I have ever done (best was when I was driving a rental car in Philadelphia. Had a couple of inches to spare on both sides and made it in without hitting the other cars).

Good luck on your next test Gaskal!

This is really good advice. Taking risks is what Calgary is all about. Once in a while they don't work out and you fail. You'll get it next time.
For me, I took the test a few days before starting a driver's ed class in high school. The plan was to take the test, knew I would fail, and then i'd have a better idea of what I would want to focus the driving lessons on.
I lost some marks for taking one hand off the wheel and turning on the radio so the test guy told me to turn it off and keep both hands on the wheel. At the end of the exam he said that "it was clear I had practiced a lot because of how calm and relaxed" I was throughout the test. I had only driven maybe twice at that point, but was so certain I would fail that there was no pressure at all and I passed. I will admit that I was glad to take the driver's ed class afterwards though. I found it useful.

It took me 4 tries, even then I barely scraped by. I was nervous as hell. Don't worry, it doesn't mean ####. In a decade+ I've had 0 at-fault accidents (was rearended once). When I had to re-test when I moved to the states I smoked it.

Passed mine the first time. Also have never been able to replicate the parallel parking mastery that I displayed in my drivers test. It was like a sunbeam from heaven guided my car into the spot. Now I parallel park like I'm doing brain surgery with a spatula.

Here's a hint if you're thinking of moving out of province for college or whatever, don't do the 2nd test for GDL. I took the first test in BC which gave me the intermediate license and you're supposed to display that green N on the car. Moved to Calgary to go to SAIT and never bothered to go home and take the 2nd test because no one here cared about whether or not I had the N visible. After graduating I went to the registrar to get my license switched to an Albertan one and figured I'd have to do the 2nd test then since they had just implemented the GDL here. When I gave the lady at the counter my BC license though she discussed with her co-worker which Alberta license I should get, and they both seemed to agree that since I had the BC license for so long I was good to have the regular Class 5, so I got to avoid the 2nd test all together
