Default City votes to change school, playground zone hours

http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgar...ours-1.2714971

Essentially, the time for both zones is now 7:30am to 9pm effective once new decals go on the signs, which is starting over the next few weeks.

I think this is a moronic change, honestly.

I'm all for it in summer. But 9pm when it's dark by 6 in the winter? Even the Mayor thinks that's ridiculous.

Terrible, the current system made sense, this doesn't. Hopefully there's enough backlash that they reverse the decision. I hate this kind of stuff in politics, no one wants to look like they don't care about safety, so they tow the line of the shrill think of the children people.

So, now during the summer, the playground zones will be done an hour and a half before the sun goes down; but during the winter, they'll be in effect for 4 hours after the sun goes down?

Yes, and School Zones will always be in effect until 9 PM even though there is never any reason for them to be active after 5 PM.

This is my tweet on the decision:

Nehkara ‏@Nehkara 1m
@nenshi @seanchucalgary I think that the changes to school/playground zones are not well thought out and have no basis in logic.

I have to drive past two schools, one is a playground zone and one is a school zone, to leave my neighbourhood. Most of the kids who attend those schools are bused in, so they're pretty much deserted by 4:00 most days.

So how does this play into school days VS non school days?
Are we looking we looking at 365 days of 7:30am-9:00pm 30km limits in all school/playground zones now?

I'm all for eliminating the confusion between playground/school zones, but taking Elbow during the weekends it's kinda nice not to worry about the school zones. But there is a few playground zones mixed in.

Ugh. This is so dumb.

I know politicians don't want to seem like they are ok with hitting kids by voting against this but come on. I'd like to see some actual data that indicates that 1) this is a problem; 2) if it is a problem, these new times will actually fix it.

You got a long way to dig out of your hole for that. He couldn't even figure out what population density was today on twitter.

I'm fine with standardizing playground and school zones, as most schools also have playgrounds and fields anyway. One standard "zone" is fine by me. A variable ending time would much better for our latitude, however.

Slowing from 50 to 30 for a block isn't going to cost me more than a few seconds in my day, so that part doesn't even bother me. I just don't think that there is any need to extend it to 9pm in the middle of the winter when the sun goes down at 4:30. I'd like to think that if you're old enough to be out playing at 9pm - 4.5 hours after winter sunset - then you're also old enough to have some safety skills of your own.
