Default 2017 Calgary Foothills PDL Thread

The 2017 schedule came out today. Time to make it back to the PDL final and win the whole thing this year.

3 weekends of Friday night / Sunday afternoon combos again this year. Location still at Glenmore Athletic Park. Of note, a new club based out of Richmond, BC (TSS Rovers) has started. Season tickets are $75 for the 7 games plus a "marquee exhibition" game.

Schedule is as follows:

Friday May 5 - TSS Rovers @ Calgary
Sunday May 7 - TSS Rovers @ Calgary
Friday May 19 - Calgary @ TSS Rovers
Sunday May 21 - Calgary @ Seattle U-23
Friday June 2 - Calgary @ Victoria
Sunday June 4 - Calgary @ Victoria
Friday June 16 - Lane United @ Calgary
Sunday June 18 - Lane United @ Calgary
Friday June 23 - Seattle U-23 @ Calgary
Sunday June 25 - Seattle U-23 @ Calgary
Thursday July 6 - Calgary @ Lane United
Saturday July 8 - Calgary @ Portland U-23
Sunday July 9 - Calgary @ Portland U-23
Sunday July 16 - Victoria @ Calgary

Going to see what I can do for organizing a road trip to the TSS Rovers or Victoria games. Haven't had enough interest on road trips to date as of yet.

Know that this doesn't necessarily apply, but for those of us who love Calgary sports it's nice that there's no conflict with home Stamps games.

That is great to hear, I was going to check that. Hopefully I'll grab some season tickets this year!

Looks like UWS (United Women's Soccer) will be the destination for Calgary Foothills WFC in 2017.

For some back story, the WFC had a dry run of exhibition games in 2015, and were set to join the USL W-League in 2016 when the league folded. Foothills applied to UWS for 2016 but were rejected by the CSA, and were planning on applying again in 2017.

Official word should be coming soon, but the United Women's Soccer league is set to expand to Calgary this summer. #yyc #WoSo

Looks like Glenmore isn't going to be able to host games this year, so they're looking at alternatives. Potentially the soccer centre.

Unfortunately Broadview is out. Doesn't meet the seating or parking requirements. I wish though....Andy Gibbs has done an unreal job with that pitch. I don't even know if he works aside from that lol.

Pitchwise, Broadview would be fantastic. In every other aspect I think it falls short (seating, parking, room for concessions, washrooms, etc).

So that leaves Hellard, Foothills Athletic and Calgary Rugby Park as potential options?

I believe they're leaning towards the soccer centre outdoor turf.

Some of us supporters met with Tommy and the club yesterday to talk about the upcoming season. Everything I heard was strictly "off the record" as plans are still being finalized, but once I am cleared to do so, I'll post details here.

Couple interviews with Tommy Wheeldon and Troye Flannery as they begin trials for their clubs. Sounds like Adekugbe, Pasquotti, Powley, Fakunle, Jones and Hay will be back on the men's side.

On the women's side there are apparently rumours of a big Canadian name playing this year (first I've heard of it).

The club announced on the Fan 960 this morning that they will be playing games at the Calgary Soccer Centre this year.

Personally, I hate the location. Having said that, in talking to Tommy a couple weeks, there weren't many options available. Glenmore and Hellard are having their turf ripped up during the season, Foothills was unavailable due to track events, AMSL clubs made a big stink about the club using Broadview, MRU wanted the club to erect nets around their soccer pitch, and the club rejected McMahon.

MRU was an option? Dang
Those nets don't sound like too bad an idea. Probably cost, $100k?

For some context, that's ~40% of the club's budget for a season. Remember that they have to pay for the flights of the visiting teams, it was a condition of their entry.

The club has been announcing players who will be back for the 2017 season. So far Elijah Adekugbe, Dylon Powley, Tofa Fakunle, Kyle Jones and Nico Pasquotti have been announced as returning for 2017.

A couple of players who won't be there are Dominick Zator and Tyrin Hutchings, who have both signed pro deals. Zator has signed with Whitecaps FC 2 and Hutchings has signed with FC Gute in Sweden.

Seems like a strange move by Tyrin. 4th tier in Sweden...

Toward the end of last year I was able to attend quite a few non-league matches around various grounds in London. South London alone puts Canada to shame when it comes to small yet quality grounds for local clubs. It's disappointing how content the powers that be are with slapping together aluminium bleachers and calling it a day.

Foothills have signed FC Edmonton academy product Bruno Zebie. A couple years ago he had an emergency call up with the first team in NASL and looked competent at that level.

Just in case anyone wants to join the supporters group this year, or just meet some of the supporters, we'll be having our AGM (which is basically just us talking about the upcoming season) at Rose and Crown on Apr 18 at 7 pm.

Also, we have new scarves in if you want one. They'll be $20 until the end of the game on May 5 and $25 after.
