Recouping draft picks
So we all know Treliving has gone all in and mortgaged some of the future to help enhance the current lineup. Whether you agree or disagree with this philosophy is for another thread, but I'm wondering what the best avenues to recoup some of those lost draft picks will be in 2017/2018.
Players with expiring contracts at the end of the upcoming season, making them assets that could be traded away prior to/at the 2018 trade deadline:
Matt Stajan (UFA)
Lance Bouma (UFA)
Mikael Backlund (UFA)
Tom McCollum (UFA)
Matt Barkowski (UFA)
Freddie Hamilton (RFA)
Daniel Pribyl (RFA)
Mark Jankowski (RFA)
Hunter Shinkaruk (RFA)
Morgan Klimchuk (RFA)
Emile Poirier (RFA)
Hunter Smith (RFA)
Austin Carroll (RFA)
Keegan Kanzig (RFA)
What could Treliving realistically get for these players? As you can see, it's a pretty long list and the team's developmental pipeline could look drastically different 12 months from now once some tough decisions have been made. The list could be longer once we know what the contracts for this year's RFA crop look like. Some I would argue, hold little to no value whatsoever, while others, would offer up a significant return based on their current status.
Who would you move? Who would you hold on to? If moving, what do you think they could back get in return from a pick perspective?

Kanzig would get us at least a 1st and two 2nds, probably more.
The only two I see holding any value are Jankowski and Backlund. The rest you'd have to pay people to take; most organizations have their own Shinkaruk's and Klimchuk's.

there really isn't much need to recoup picks. If the Flames are going for it, they'll likely keep all the parts they have as injuries happen and they still are NHL quality.

It is an interesting question. If this thing blows up in our face in 2-3 years from now I think you are looking to move on from guys like Gio, Frolik, Brouwer, Ferland, Hamonic and maybe even Brodie.
The thing people always forget with this topic is the fact that we already stockpiled picks going back to 2014 when the rebuild began from Russell (2nd), Hudler (2nd, 4th), Glencross (2nd, 3rd), Berra (2nd), Stempniak (3rd). So we are really just shifting picks that we acquired. If you view it that way, then most of it is a wash minus the 1st round picks.

When Las Vegas decided against taking one of our prospects and instead picked a UFA that they could have signed on July 1, that said something about the value of those prospects.

Don't recoup the picks. If that's the plan then why trade the picks in the first place?
Daryl Sutter did very well trading picks for players. What didn't work for him was trading up his 1st to recoup lost picks.
If the Flames start stockpiling picks that means things have gone horribly wrong.

If we're at the stage where we are recouping 2nd round picks, it probably means we are selling parts of our roster because of failure. There just isn't any excess assets to spare to recoup those picks imo. Outside of 'the untouchables' (ie Gaudreau, Monahan, Bennett, Backlund, Tkachuk, Hamilton, Giordano, Brodie and Hamonic), we don't have many players with a lot of value. A guy like Frolik could go for some picks but that would be a step backward. Maybe Stajan could go for a 4th? There's really not a lot there outside of our prospects and it makes little sense to deal them for picks unless you're pretty sure the kid will bust.

To follow the Chicago model is to trade Ferland at the end of his next contract. You take the RFAs that have proven value but no longer fit in your cap structure and move them. Same with the last year of Frolik if a guy like Bennet or Tkachuk needs the cap room.
You trade the last years of good players or graduating prospects in order to restock.

Matt Stajan's name with the UFA behind it looks so good. That will be an exciting day.

You're joking on your valuation on Kanzig, right?

Stajan has been a great 4th line center for the Flames.

There aren't really any avenues to recuperate picks other than hope the current cupboard pans out in full so that the Flames can trade the few pieces that they don't end up needing.
Hopefully the NHL doesn't decide to add team #32 in the meantime.

The only way I want this team to be able to recoup picks in the next several years, is because they develop so much NHL talent they have to recycle some of it.
Like Frederik Andersen for a 1st and 2nd for example.

Oh, give it a rest.
Yes, the players the Flames left exposed were not especially valuable players, but that does not somehow mitigate against the whole system which does in fact contain some excellent and highly sought after players—most of which were not eligible for expansion. We heard just this AM from Elliotte Friedman about how hard Garth Snow pushed to have one of the Flames young defense prospects included in the Hamonic deal.
And no, we do not actually know that VGK could simply have waited until 1 July to sign Engelland. I certainly do not believe that they could have signed him for the same bargain price.

He's an old player making way too much money. UFA can't come soon enough.

I don't mind trading picks if it also allows us to attract talent like Spencer Foo.
