Anyone check out Smith's arms in his interviews today? Tre might have exaggerated about Smith's abilities in other sports, but he didn't exaggerate about how fit he is. Haven't seen a Flame that ripped since Iggy.

Can confirm on NHL 17 black looks way better with home colors than the red. But it looks weird with the retros and away.

This is something I hadn't thought of. Considering our defense's overall ability to skate with the puck, adding a puck-handling goalie who can really move it up to them quickly might end up being one of the best aspects of having Smith back there.

Here are a series of articles looking at puck-handling goalies and their effect on possession metrics:

Puck-Handling goalies at Even Strength.

Quote:
In conclusion, puck-handling goaltenders have an impact on possession at even strength. Bishop and Smith proved to have positive impacts to their team’s possessions both offensively and defensively...
On Special Teams

Quote:
Overall, Bishop and Smith are able to positively affect both shot attempts for and against while on the power play ... Smith and Price were able to have a positive impact on shot attempts for while shorthanded but also allowed more shot attempts against.

I would rather have Mrazek.
I think most fans would have said Smith even before the trade.

Flames management wanted someone they thought was more of a sure thing than in previous years.

While many fans may question whether Smith is a sure thing, Flames management is pretty comfortable that he is.

I'm willing to trust Treliving view on this as he has much better knowledge generally than I do and specifically on this subject.

Mrazek would have likely been more of a gamble than Elliot was, considering how bad Mrazek was last year and his lack of a long track record.

They both have risk IMO, but I feel like Mrazek has greater potential to pay off in both the short term and long term.
Based on what? The wings can't give him away.
I'd rather have Howard than Mrazek.

I'd like to mention the last time someone on Mike Smith's team scored 60 points, it was 2011 and his team went the the Conference final.

Now that doesn't mean anything persay, but anyone doubting Mr Smith needs to ask themselves what goalie is supposed to do when Osama Bin Laden was still alive the last time his club employed a 60 point scorer.

Mike Smith is going to be Dwayne Roloson reborn. Down to the crazy eyes.

I hung out with a different NHL goalie last night. He said Smith is an amazing goalie, and that the only reason his numbers were bad is because the Coyotes were such crap. This isn't really news to us, but I thought it was nice to hear from a goalie in the league.

I think Smith will do very well in Calgary.

What were his general thoughts about the Flames team itself??

He thinks the Flames are going to be one of the best teams in the west. He also said Hamonic is a very solid player and an even better person.

Whereabouts were you and Smith hanging out?

...Gah, you neutered the possibility of that joke by opening with "different NHL goalie" I guess. Oh well.

After having enough time to analyze this move a little more, I'm really warming up to the suggestion that Smith's numbers were directly hampered by the team iced in front of him. Also speaks to his psychological makeup; getting shelled that long has to be pretty discouraging and his consistency indicates he's able to put things behind him quickly and do his job.
Can't wait for the season

Not going thru a 1000 posts , Smith is a overrated goalie so I am very happy to see we landed Hamonic and re-signed Stone because Smith needs good defensive dmen in front of him. So reading justification and rah rah Arizona sucked wont cut it for me. Bad move.

Over rated by who?

Most people think he sucks because his numbers have been average to below average for most of his career.

Bottom line though, is he's faced more shots, including high danger shots, per game than just about any goalie in the league over the last 5 seasons. That's a fact.

And whether or not it was a bad move is still yet to be determined.
