After some googling it looks like the Concrete Equities executives did face criminal charges and got 6 months house arrest and 240hrs community service

Chandran of Platinum Equities was also criminally charged with fraud over $5000, but can't find any sentencing on the charge.

Nenshi just called the guy 'one of Calgary's most important philanthropists' on global news. Said he knows him well. No mention of lawsuits against him or that he's likely a crook.

Just because someone is getting sued doesn't mean they're a crook. The business he's in is looked at very hard and he hasn't faced any charges.

Oh yeah. We all know how hard exempt market securities and limited partnerships are looked at. Some of the biggest investor scams have involved real estate get rich quick schemes with unrealistic interest rate promises sold to ma and pa as 'safe as can be'. I don't know if he's a crook. Just going with the earlier posts that inferred. And to be targeted like he was, I'm guessing he's not squeaky clean.

It probably is possible to be both a fraudulent scumbag as well as a nice guy. I'm not sure those characteristics have to be mutually exclusive necessarily.

As I understand it, he sold properties to his buddy at Concrete Equities at vastly inflated prices; a common example is a strip mall in the NE that sold for 21 million but was worth by all accounts 6 million at the most. So he'd get a substantial down payment and then hold a vendor take back mortgage for the balance so no appraisals would ever have to be done and no LP approvals were needed. Then, this is speculation, but the properties were run so poorly that the tenants would move out and the value would decrease and he'd foreclose, often without any standard redemption period because the values would be so out of wack. So he'd get enough down payment to essentially achieve a market value sale for the property. Then he'd get the properties back with no major legal hassle or down time while in redemption. This happened several times with his standard defense being he just happened to be selling at the top of the market and getting the properties back at the bottom. Whatever the case, he wasn't a victim just like the LP's.

He's been shot three times since but each time the damage was less and less due to him wearing increasingly advanced body armour. The most recent time he didn't even notice until people told him about it later.

In his first media interview since the shooting, Mamdani told Postmedia he was on his way to a weekly board meeting at his Strategic Group on the morning of Dec. 19, 2016 when he was confronted by a gunman, who fled after firing six rounds.

The bullets struck his lower lip, left cheek, left ear, left arm and his chest. Although the shooter appeared to have aimed at his head and heart, where the wounds could have been fatal, he survived.

“I sure feel lucky,” he said, sitting in a boardroom at his company’s downtown offices, the scars on his lip and cheek still visible.

“I remember an awful lot of blood. I remember an awful lot of pain … I was thinking of keeping my family calm and reassured, and dealing with the issues.”

I guess this could go in here.

Just heard that Riaz Mamdani / Strategic Group filed for bankruptcy protection (the guy that was shot in front of his house a few years ago). This is a huge news. Very diversified real estate holdings in Calgary, both commercial and residential. There gonna be a lot of investors and creditors left hanging.

three of the bullets appear to have targeted his head, the other three at his chest, said Carlo Galasso, the head dealer at Rolls-Royce Motor Cars Alberta, which had Mamdani’s damaged vehicle in its shop.
Galasso said Rolls-Royce prides itself on “extreme occupant protection.” The luxury vehicles, he said, come with the “strongest windshield on the planet.” After observing the bullet holes that riddled Mamdani’s car, Galasso said at least some of the rounds appear to have deflected across the glass before they flew into the vehicle’s cabin.

Bullet holes are visible in the windshield of Mamdani’s Rolls-Royce. Gavin Young / Postmedia Network
“I’m not a ballistics expert, but you can tell the bullets struggled to penetrate the glass,” he said. “If he was driving any other vehicle in the world, he’d be dead.”
