When's the last time a signing like this has paid off for an NHL team? Honestly can't remember one instance.

Niklas Backstrom is one. I don't know if it was the most recent.

Viktor Fasth also. Played a season for the Ducks and played well enough to get them a 3rd round and a 5th round draft pick.

Antti Raanta has also been a serviceable NHL goalie so far.

Signing a 23 year old from Europe? Panarin worked out pretty well this year.

Soderberg came out of nowhere for Boston. In terms of goalies, Jonas Hiller wasn't drafted. Same goes for Antii Niemi. Sergei Bobrovsky, is another one.

That depends on your definition of "a signing like this" and "paid off". I'll assume you mean undrafted free agent goalie from the Euro leagues in which case I'd say frequently enough to be worth giving it a shot. Few of them turn out to be legit #1 starters but enough have carved out a career as at least an NHL back-up and really for a zero asset cost pick-up even just a depth NHL'er is a pay off.

One answer to "what was Treliving doing at the World Championships" it seems.

Not surprising. Treliving may believe that evaluating a goaltending candidate is like evaluating a coach. Talking to them is not that important.

Best goalie not playing in the NHL I'm sure lol. That's cool, low risk high reward I suppose.

Hello guys, as I wrote earlier, I don īt folow Czech extraleague at all, I have no interest in it, and that is why I cannot tell you more about him. But he can turn to be good asset, no one knows. I don īt like Czech extraleague, but I guess I should start to pay attention because of Flames, Pribyl, now Rittich, I will try next season maybe :-)

According to this article http://hokej.idnes.cz/hokej-nhl-davi...144339_nhl_cig /interview with him, he is very surprised, everything was done in a few days.
-Calgary watched him during WC in Russia
-his agent Spalenka did a great job
- knows it will be hard to make a team
- was in touch with our GM, coach of goalies and chief of scouts
- did not speak to any of Czech players in CGY so far
- must improve his English
- knows it is a risk situation for him, but told Czech media that you cannot win anything without risking something...

So we will see guys!

Gretings from Czech republic! So many Czechs in CGY now, I am not used to this situation :-))))

Meh. This is more of a signing to try and compete for a back-up job in Stockton. Don't get me wrong there is no risk, but I Highly doubt we will see him in a regular season game for the flames in the next year.

For the record, Soderberg was originally a 2nd rnd pick (Blues) - just took an extremely long time to over-ripen across the pond before coming over...
