Coyotes sign Clayton Keller to ELC
Keller will play out the remainder of the season with Arizona.
Bob McKenzie ✔ @TSNBobMcKenzie
Clayton Keller of BU has agreed to terms on his ELC with ARI.
Craig Morgan ✔ @craigsmorgan
The plan is for Clayton Keller to join the Coyotes immediately and play out the rest of the season in the NHL.

This was an awesome pick by the Yotes.
I was really hoping the Flames could get him somehow, but obviously very happy with Tkachuk.
21g and 45p in 31 games at BU as an 18 year old.
Just sick numbers.
For reference, Gaudreau was a point per game guy in the NCAA at the same age IIRC.

Looking forward to seeing him light it up and us Canucks fans wonder why we didn't draft him as well.

great young player; too bad he plays for a division rival; too bad for him that he plays for the Coyotes

Unlike most College signings, burning the first year of his contract wasn't a consideration.
Because he's under 20 and the Coyotes have fewer than 10 games remaining, his contract will slide this season and he'll still have 3 years remaining on his ELC next year.

you can't even say something like "here come the Yotes" because they are so far back you can't even see them in the rearview mirror.
that being said, they had a fine 2016 draft. Keller and Chychrun look like really good prospects.

They've been stringing together a few good drafts now. I think when Doan retires it's going to really usher in a new era of Coyotes hockey, if that team keeps headed the way they are they'll be pretty good

That's too bad, Tkachuk's younger brother Brady is committed to BU this fall, was hoping to see them line up together.

Hopefully he demands a trade away from the Coyotes like Kyle Turris did.

Dylan Strome IMO is overrated. The only time he's ever looked really good is in junior games as he's been underwhelming in international play and hasn't been able to make the step to the pros. Those brothers look like great junior players that may not be able to completely translate their game to the NHL level.
Keller looks like a good one though. Good to see smaller skilled players succeed in the NHL. Hopefully he can except when he's playing the Flames of course.

Yeah, except the Coyotes won't be a part of that. They'll go through their usual fake rebuild where they rely on their rising stars on ELC's and then trade them away to start over when their team budget starts too creep to far above the cap floor.
In 3 years or so, it'll probably look something like
1. Edmonton
2. Calgary
3. Anaheim
4. San Jose
5. Arizona
6.Vancouver
7. Los Angeles
8. Vegas

In 3 years they may not even be in the Pacific Division anymore.

I think Calgary and Edmonton will be battling for tops in the division over the next five years or so. Next year may still have Anaheim strong enough to take it but with Perry and Getzlaf getting older that will run out soon enough.

Wouldn't be the least bit surprised if this guy contributed to handing a loss to either the Blues or Kings down the stretch to help the Flames out.
He's young and small but he has game breaker written all over him.

Doesn't Keller have a few more weeks of classes to finish before he joins the Coyotes? I wonder if he just withdrew from the courses as he knows he's likely to be a millionaire going forward.

Not sure if this true or not. According to Capfriendly.com the contract does burn a year and has only two years left on the ELC next year. Can someone else shed some light on this?
