I like to think that gated communities are for the purposes of keeping the inhabitants in rather than keeping everyone else out.

I've watched enough Dateline and 20/20 to know you can get away with murder in the States if you're protecting your property...and sometimes even if it's not your property.

A guy in Texas calls 911 to report someone is burgling his neighbour's house. The cops say they're on their way and guy says they're getting away. He then tells 911 he's going to shoot them. The operator tells him not to and to stay in the house. Next thing you know you hear gunshots.

He blasted 3 guys in the back as they ran away and he got away with it cause they ran across his lawn when running away.

It wouldn't surprise me if the old guy gets off scot free.

So what about what you wrote makes sense? There are gated communities in Calgary as well, not just in the USA. Pretty much any place we go to is someone's property, either the 'state' or private. Some people expand that to entire communities, if they want to pay for that they can.

Gated communities are like ghettos for the well-off.

Ta-Nehisi Coates's blog has had a series of great little posts about this incident. There is some interesting history of race relations in the area, so as always, these tensions run deep.

From my view, the act of shooting Martin was an example of Zimmerman's lack of respect for human life, not an example of his racism. However, the assumptions Zimmerman made regarding Martin prior to engaging him in the confrontation were undeniably race-based.

At 2:20 of the initial call to the PD, some people are hearing that Zimmerman says "Fata-ing coons". Judge for yourself.

Link

That's right before he's told not to follow Martin, and after he says "These A-holes always get away".

I think he was setting up the justification to shoot. Couldn't tell if Martin had on jeans or sweats, but knew he was "on drugs or something", OK. Due to his education, Zimmerman had the knowledge of what was needed to justify a self defense shooting, and created that scenario with the phone call. That's just my opinion, of course.

I'm aware of that.

Expand what? The concept that all real property is owned by someone? I think you're trying to say something other than what your words mean.

Choosing to live in a gated community is anti-social behaviour. It says a lot about the type of people that would basically throw up an unwelcome sign to people they feel are lesser in a misguided attempt to feel prestigious, better or secure. It's the type of mentality that might cause someone to think that gifting discarded tin cans to the garbage collector isn't insulting and disrespectful because they are just a garbage collector.

Remember that schools down here weren't even really integrated until the 70s. Locally I've met people who said when they graduated high school in 72 the school was still segregated. Perhaps it was "illegal" but it still happened. You folks are very savvy about the US so I'm sure you've picked up on the fact that to much of the US, Florida is the ultimate scumhole in every way.
Dang, I'm still waiting for someone to check out the Rice Lake Loop house and guess who lives there.haha

As far as gated communities go, my next house is going to be surrounded by a an alligator-filled moat.

I find it hard to believe that all someone has to do to kill someone and get away with it is call 9/11 first, say the person looks suspicious, then shoot them. No evidence it ISN'T self-defence, after all. Is it that ridiculously simple to commit the perfect crime? Shouldn't they look for evidence proving it was self-defence?

So which gated community do you live in?

Bias motivated violence. No need to differentiate beyond that.

While we are discussing racial profiling, why does the media keep calling Zimmerman "white"?

What would you call him? He may be Latino, he may be Greek, he may be Irish. Is that picture supposed to make that answer clear?

People only care if its a white guy doing something racist.

Hispanic guy kills black guy doesn't sound like headline news.

With his name and the fact that it's in Florida, I kept picturing an older jewish guy.

In reality, they actually help create a city-wide ghetto as the lower-income households start to concentrate in areas 'outside the walls'. It's a vicious circle as by moving inside the walls the conditions outside the walls start to deteriorate more rapidly. Eventually, once the conditions outside the walls reach a certain points, the consequences of the rapid deterioration start to affect the walled areas.
