There's more than one kind of toughness in hockey. Joe Nieuwendyk didn't hit much and rarely took penalties, but he took more punishment than most players just from standing in the goal mouth and looking for tip-ins.
With that guy's hands and wrists? If he started punching faces he'd have to start eating his meals with a straw! He wouldnt be able to hold a fork!

Like I said, I made peace with the trade at the time because I genuinely thought Monahan's career was going to end imminently. I thought his days were numbered and it was a low number.

I really like him as a player and I'm glad he's healthy and finding a resurgence, I'm just pissed its not with us.

Its similar to Tanev, it just feels like any game could be his last, being held together by chewing gum and hope.

Sure. I was just responding to the ‘at this stage of his career’. I see no reason a first is out of the question

He is a one way guy who can’t be a #2C on any team with hopes of a deep run. I think that and the injury history limits his value

I don’t think you have to be a face puncher to play a hard game. It is the same as Ruzicka, didn’t use the body to make the game harder for opponents.

I think Monahan can be the 2C on a contender, provided they give him sound two-way wingers and the team has a strong 3C who can draw the heavy defensive assignments.

I can't think of a contender that would have him at 2C

maybe 3C or maybe he goes to an more average team IDK

I don’t think he is a #2C if the rest of the line up has to be catered to fit his game and he also doesn’t score enough to make up for the rest of his deficiencies to be an offensive #2C. He is a third line power play guy now.

Yeah, especially with the injury history...he's not going to be mucking it up in the corners, he needs his wingers for that, he was always more of a poacher.

Playing for a team that doesn't care if they win or lose and honestly would rather lose is also easier...will be interesting to see him in meaningful games

I don’t know. Monahan was very good for a number of years for us.

But the last couple of years were brutal. His time was up here.

Sorry, let me clarify.

At this stage in his career as a dude who was on the brink of retirement due to multiple severe surgeries. I love him, but he's held together with tape and glue. Not all careers last the same length.

I so want Monny to lift the Cup this year. Then he can come back home and show the Red and Gold the way!

If it isn't Toronto or Edmonton I'll cheer for whichever team acquires him.

One of the few former players (/players in general) I feel compelled to root for.

Sure. Then you have guys who have surgery and proper rehab, some guys that are held up pending correct diagnosis and treatment

Backs was injured often early (many some of us noted as unrelated), Gary Roberts recovered from something significant. Crosby has an interesting story

Also, who said several of Monahan’s surgeries were severe? Numerous, yes. But severe?

You just don’t know what you don’t know

My biggest problem is with the Monahan trade is that the pick was so far out, and it can potentially be top 10. I could be mistaken.

It kind of makes it hard to the team to commit to a direction moving forward.

It has feel good vibes, but I don't see any way that the guy makes it to the end of the season, let alone through a playoff run without another injury. It's going to hamper his value big time, but someone like the Oilers, Leafs or Bruins will probably kick serious tires if the price is right.
