Tried one for the first time. So are they only designed to be used 20 minutes at a time? (The occulus).

I needed a taste of this so I just bought a Google Cardboard viewer for $20 online.

I know it's just 360 video but my curiousity is killing me. Plus I heard there is porn for Google Cardboard. Might as well give that a shot?

Soooo Google Cardboard originated as an April Fools joke, right? I can't believe I've never heard of that before.

The software? You can keep it on as long as you like (are able if you get motion sickness). A lot of the demos and software so far has been geared towards getting as many people as possible through with a good taste of what VR is.

Even when we visited Valve and got a hands on demo from a friend, they powered us through half a dozen different thing relatively quickly to make sure we could try them all. Otherwise, you'd be in there for literally half or a full day.

They've been handing them out like crazy at conventions for a long time now. It's an easy branding advertising thing for companies.

Man, the mark ups on these sets are pretty crazy. Could make a pretty penny flipping them if you got in on the pre-orders for the heck of it. Nice thing too is that shipping was zero for the Oculus and just $5 for the Vive.

But holy poop, the box for the Vive is MASSIVE!

Yeah I literally heard about it today, googled it and decided to give it a shot.

It's $20 canadian bucks all in. Even if it doesn't work it's not much of a loss.

Pretty excited now that I actually read more about it.

Best Apps:

But a lot of articles come with the caveat that this is not really anything like the real VR out there like Vive

lol, no doubt. "Caution: $20 worth of cardboard does not replicate $1000 worth of computer tech."

God damn this is so cool. If anybody is locked in on getting one of these headsets (Vive or Oculus) you definitely want to watch for some deals on steam cards until them. You'll likely be hitting a whole ton of games at once when you get things rolling.

I'm a little surprised you took one of them off to post. Someday I'm going to get one but in the meantime I'll live vicariously through you early adopters. Once the novelty wears off please provide your thoughts on which device is better, or if there's little difference.

So I am a little late to the VR party and I'm seeing a lot of information on different units. While the various VR tech looks interesting, I think I am more interested in virtual widescreens. Does any of this tech lend well to virtual widescreens to replace existing multi-monitor setups?

I run multiple monitors at work and home but I wouldn't want to throw on a headset for that. Cost wise it would be less to buy the monitors outright nevermind the cables and headset strapped to your head that would prevent your ability to look at other things on your desk.

Unless you mean like home theatre viewing but even then, I'd still stick with the setup that I've got right now.

Darn, maybe I'm thinking of something like Google Glasses, augmented reality with a large screen in front of me. I have triple monitors for home, but with large bezels and less that great stands, I'd like something a little more high tech.

This is why augmented reality like Hololens is cool. Add an aiming reticle while taking a leak, shoot a piss turret at evil flying urinal monsters or toilet battleships.

So far, I've been way more interested in full VR (of course with the actual release of 3 major ones in the next few months). AR should have a nice easy road as the VR launches pave the way in the public mindshare. Or possibly not at all if the VR launches all fail miserably (maybe due to cost, lack of content, etc.)

AR came with the 3DS and Vita but it was dead pretty quickly. Augmented reality could be more interesting in the future if they improve that terribly narrow frame of view. It'll likely be more for work than entertainment and gaming though.

So I got the itch and splurged for Crunch's old Oculus Dk2. I had to give it a good deep cleaning first because it seemed to have collected some of the scariest dust ever seen.

That said, I'm having fun but my eyes are starting to hurt because of the resolution of the DK2. For those that have gone from DK2 to CV1, has it improved significantly for how it looks and feels to your eyes?

Next app created by George Costanza: VR TOILET (catheters would only solve half the problem).

Have you found any good desktop apps so you don't need to take off your goggles to use your regular computer functions?
