Speaking of goalies playing a lot of games. Kipper played 7 seasons with 70+ games in a row. Thats nuts, wow I'd forgotten how good he was.
...and in those seven seasons the Flames played a total of 26 playoff games. They failed to make the playoffs three times, and bowed out of the first round in all four of their post season appearances.
Kiprusoff's workload was a significant contributing factor to the Flames tepid success.

How is putting Lazar in place of Tkachuk not incredibly disruptive? Putting an unproven, rusty player who's had a bad season on our best line is about the most disruptive thing you could do. Bennett in for Tkachuk is our best option to keep that line stable and productive.
Least! Least disruptive of the line combos. I would rather disrupt one line rather than three. It's not like Bennett looked like a world beater on the Backlund line anyways. Having three out of the 4 lines together that put us on a 10 game winning streak is better than having one. In my opinion anyways.
I also think it is easier for a guy like Talbot to play that many games because it is only his second season a full time number one guy.
Talbot is already almost 30 years old.
Miikka Kiprusoff was one of the best goalies of the past two decades. He was 29 years old in his first full season as a NHL starter, and with the heavy workload never advanced past Game #7 of the first round.

I was concerned when I saw Johnson as the starter, but his stats against Nashville check out.
You have to rest the starter from game to game. This is a key game for the Flames and will give the indicators to coaches how to play the two goaltenders through the playoff series.
I expect Johnson and the team to rise to the occasion as tonight is a great game to keep the pressure on the upper pacific teams.
Except for 50 some odd games this year, Johnson played every bit as good as Elliott, if not better.
This is not a Kipprusoff / Sauve situation.
Absolutely. They're actually still statistically pretty close over the whole season. SV% is the same, GAA very close, Elliott has more wins (both in total and relative to # of games), but he's also played more after the team found it's groove.
Both goalies have had better and worse stretches, but on average they're both fine, and it's good to give them both games before the real games start again. We might very well need both during the playoffs.
I, for one, will defer to Gulutzan's judgement in how he is managing his goalies. Hartley did a perfect job managing his goalies in that playoff year. He rode Hiller hard when he had the hot hand, and quickly switched to Ramo when he was better - and he always switched if he rode either goalie too hard.
Gulutzan has been doing a good job himself I thought. I actually expected Johnson to get a few starts from now until the end of the season. This is one of the games I figured he would get actually. This one AND Colorado most likely. He is the best backup for the Flames in like 20 years (well, unless you consider the Hiller/Ramo tandem, but it was not so much a starter/backup situation in my opinion).
Looking at the rest of the Flames' schedule, there are a lot of road games and a lot of very good teams left. You can't keep riding Elliott. Tonight's game is probably the 2nd easiest game on the schedule. St. Louis is playing extremely well - allowing 7 or 8 goals in their last 7 or 8 road games (that's crazy, no?). Anaheim, San Jose, etc. - Johnson is going to probably have to play one or two of those teams yet, but if the Flames experience some bad luck (knock on wood) then Gulutzan might not have that option to relieve Elliott then.
Give Elliott some nights off - he has earned it and has been a workhorse lately. Sure, he hasn't played that many games this season, but he sure has played a lot of hockey lately. That's the point.
Sleep! Man why didn't Sigalet think of that? Is there any stopping them? They already have this seasons MVP.
Go Flames. I miss Ferland and Tkachuk. Please come back soon.
Ferland is in tonight!

i appreciate the point you are trying to make but the correlation is weak. Too many other variables to be confident in the causal relationship.
I generally agree that Kipper was over worked though. I do no think it necessarily follows that Cam Talbot will play poorly in the playoffs this year because he has played a lot of games.

Agree to disagree I suppose... but the 3M line is too important to throw some plug onto (Lazar is that right now, not to say he won't improve). Versteeg-Bennett-Brouwer haven't done much this year, no real reason to keep that together and the 4th line has been changed up all year. Chiasson was really the only option on that top line with Ferland out, anyway... just my thoughts.
