I really hate to say this because there is no way to do it without it sounding snide...and I think you would have checked this before posting online...but did you check that the headphone jack is pushed all the way in?
100% serious. If it's only 3/4 of the way in it would do exactly what you describe and could have easily got a slight tug over the course of a day.

^ Snide aside, ...I did.
Seems to me anyway if that was the issue, wouldn't there be no volume, as opposed to extremely low? I dunno?
edit: just to make clear also, it's the actual earpiece on the phone itself that's the problem, everything else is cool.

^ Yeah, tried that already... no luck.
I've got an appointment at the Apple store with a "genius" so we'll see what's up with it then. It's only a couple weeks past the one year warranty. Hopefully if I whine and snivel hard enough they'll fix it for a minimal fee.

man, if you ever have to buy another one, get it from Futureshop or Bestbuy. Get on their warranty and never worry again. They just do direct swap outs. I've traded in 3 already for very minor issues and actually cause they didn't have them in stock, work my way from a 3g 8g to a 3gs 32g. Right now i have a white iphone but want a black one, just waiting for one more minor problem...!

I know...I bought it from Future Shop actually, but cheaped out on the extended warranty.
I always have a problem with buying extended warranties. I feel scammed paying extra to insure the product you've been sold remains usable beyond one lousy year. Sometimes I get them, and sometimes I don't. Usually it's the product I cheaped out on that requires the extended of course.

There is a max volume limit in the settings, try that.
My wife's Iphone also blanked out the speaker, I did a hard reboot, seemed to fix it.

you would think so, but if it's in 3/4 and making a slight connection then you get a really soft sound. volume controls work and all that, just everything seems obnoxiously quiet.
at least that's how it worked on my cd player with 60 seconds of anti-skip in grade 9...

This might be a weird question but does it happen with all calls or just some? When I call my girlfriend on her office phone I can barely hear her but when I call her on her cellphone things are fine. I'm not sure if it's the iPhone or her phone.

This can also happen when the earpiece/headphone cable has a breakage somewhere in it, or the jack or the connector is damaged.
Try a different earpiece and try your earpiece on another device.

I went to the apple store to get my iphone replaced a little over a year ago and traded my grubby abused earphones in as well. I'm a carpenter, and those things were disgusting Sunblock/Dust/Dirt/Sweat, etc. They were beige, not white. No problem.
I'm certain the guy picked them up with tweezers and straight into the garbage once I left.

Well, I gotta give hats off to the Apple store, or at least to my "genius". I took it in for my appointment today and the girl I dealt with couldn't diagnose a problem so she simply gave me a new phone. Pretty awesome seeing how I'm almost a month past warranty and I didn't have to kiss anyone's ass to get it. A pleasant surprise for sure. Apple store is definitely in my good book.
