Might be kind of cool for a few minutes but I don't know how practical it will be to watch a whole game this way. The VR craze still makes no sense to me.
I wonder if they will continue the high broadcast quality we've come to expect. I'm sure the VR will be thrilling what with the perfect sound synchronization and the silent crowd.

I'd think watching this with a dedicated viewer like Gear VR would be a bit better than the cardboard glasses they're giving away? But I'm not paying $150 for that. I'll drink the Canadian.
Edit: Missed the bit about the pin code. Cardboard it is. Which describes the taste of the beer too.

We certainly aren't yet at a time when sitting down and putting a headset on is going to be an attractive option to too many people. The screens/headsets aren't where they need to be, the signal quality isn't where it needs to be, and the bandwidth isn't where it needs to be. Currently viewing things in VR on youtube is neat, but not overly practical and it's very "standard definition".
Every now and then you get a real cool glimpse into how things could be, and it's quite exciting. Unfortunately those experiences aren't plentiful or long. The first time I was able to experience a view from the International Space Station, it was flat-out awe inspiring. It was also 30 seconds long and a bit fuzzy.
Give it 5-10 years and we'll be able to strap much better screens to our faces using headsets that are much less intrusive. We'll be able to watch sporting events with friends across the country from any seat we want. I think for most people to get it though, we have some hurdles to overcome.
Sportsnet not focused on the actual viewing experience for this, why not make it work within GearVR, Daydream, Vive, etc.?
I think it technically work with those other VR systems. Molson just wants to make sure you buy their beer to watch it but not feel the need to put down cash on an actual headset.

It's just a Molson branded Google Cardboard viewer. Easy enough to get without buying the beer. Though sad if you can't view anything at all without the pin code, I agree.
I want to see NHL players with these strapped to their helmets instead of just front-facing GoPro HDs:

We should get 4K like the damn Leafs and the Jays get.
Unfortunately, I suspect a limiting factor will be the craptacular Shaw HD-PVR I have (aside from the fact that only Telus offers 4K TV service in Alberta).
YMMV but I was able to pick up some Molson Canadian VR cardboard goggles without having to buy any Canadian. At the CO-OP Liquor in Saskatoon they had them in a basket, free for the taking and not packaged in the boxes of beer. I figured you still had to buy Canadian to go with it but when I asked if I needed to the lady at the till said no.
So check your local liquor store (doesn't have to be CO-OP) and see if you can just grab a pair. That sounds odd. You know what I mean.
