New Radio Station - The Peak 95.3
http://globalnews.ca/news/1289115/ne...es-in-calgary/
Quote:
95.3 The Peak officially takes to the airwaves at 9:53 a.m. on Friday, April 25th.
The station will play tunes from bands like Weezer, Metric, Jack White, The Sheepdogs, Mumford and Sons, Beck and Vampire Weekend.
|
Looks like it could be good competition for X929, and potentially fill the void when Fuel 90.3 changed formats.

Yeah my buddy is going to be the evening announcer there. The Peak in Vancouver is pretty good so I'm glad they're out there now.

It will be interesting to see what this station is like.
Some what off topic, how do these radio stations stay alive, pay the bills and do they actually generate a profit for the companies? It seems like there is an over abundance of radio stations and a fairly limited and possibly shrinking number of listeners.

Hopefully they make sure to sync up their songs exactly with Cjay and X929 so we can listen to the same song simultaneously on three different stations.

Sounds just like X929.

Wasn't there a previous station in Calgary called The Peak as well?

So a second X for when X isn't playing a band you like or when Fraser and Carly start to talk?

from wikipedia
Quote:
The station was launched on April 15, 1982 as CKIK-FM, and first broadcast an adult album rock format. Throughout the 1980s and much of the 1990s, CKIK-FM (known on-air as 107 KIK FM and later as Rock 107) played a variety of rock formats. Early in its history, the station encountered financial difficulties, which were alleviated in 1985, when Harvey Glatt, Ottawa music impresario and founder of CHEZ-FM, acquired a 75% interest in the station, which he held until 1995.[2]
In September 1997, CKIK-FM adopted a CHR format branded as "Power 107".
In January 2002, CKIK-FM would later evolve to become a hot adult contemporary station known as "The Peak 107.3".
In 2004, CKIK-FM dropped the hot AC format, becoming a classic rock station branded as "Q107". The station's call letters were changed to CFGQ.

I'll throw it on the old preset. It seems X929 is moving closer and closer to Vibe and Virgin with each passing day (They often have 9 or 10 songs on their playlist page that are also played by those two pop stations), so this will hopefully be more like X929 was 4 or 5 years ago.

X92.9 became unlistenable when they started focusing heavily on the hipster music, maybe this will be better...
...who are we kidding, it will still be full of the usual forced Canadian content.

There's lots of great Canadian music, this is one of the areas that X929 actually excels in, imo. They focus on younger, more indie Canadian music, and not the Tom Cochrane/54-40 repeats that Cjay plays.

I'm not saying they won't be getting any male listeners. That would be dumb. I am saying they are targeting females.
I work in advertising so they came in a few months ago and told me what the station will be like. They give us a heads up so we can plan and will hopefully advertise on their station.

Instead of 54-40 we got years of endless I Mother Earth, Sum 41, Age of Electric, and so on. Same thing in the end.

Sure, that was very selective tough, they also play The Arkells, Japandriods, Arcade Fire, Whitehorse, Tokyo Police Club, K-OS, etc. Lots of good Canadian stuff.

CBC 3, if you want to hear more than the same 10 Canadian bands over and over.
