It used to be moot but nowadays with things like dropbox or cloud backup/storage it's becoming an issue. CBC had an article out last week outlining how poor upload speeds are in Canada.

Has anyone else been having issues with using a ton of Bandwidth on home internet the last couple months? I have gone over my 300 GB "ceiling" the last 3 months on Shaw. My Month resets on the 12th, and since then, I have already used 35 GB according to Shaw. I haven't been Torrenting, and I have bought a few games on Xbox One digitally. The only thing I can think is that Netflix has been chewing it up, but I don't really use it that much, just a bit on the weekends when my kids are with me. I never came close to 300 GB before June, and now I can't seem to stay under it.

I am starting to wonder if Shaw is counting Shaw on Demand usage through my Set-Top Box as Internet Data, as we use the Free movies in there quite often.

How are your kids using Netflix? My son used to leave it running all the time, just as I often leave broadcast TV running. However it can easily use a GB per hour.

You can go into your Netflix settings on a computer browser and drop the quality. However that does it across the board. I was doing that for watching Netflix on my phone (cell data), but then my son found his quality dropped as well.

Shaw doesn't count VOD towards bandwidth. Maybe check PC's for viruses.

If using WiFi it may be time to change passwords as well.

PCs are clean. I think my Apple TV gets left on and that might be the culprit. I better make sure its set to Auto-Power Off.

If the speeds are as claimed I'll make the switch, but if they're just "theoretical" maximums that you never get close to I won't bother
I receive about 96mbps down and 19mbps throughout the day with no slow down.

Definitely not theoretical performance, but actual observation.

Note that I do have ftth. To the person that said that TV streams slow the Internet down, that's simply not true on fibre.

I am having the exact same issue as you (ton of sudden bandwidth usage in past couple months) and just caught it now. Mine was a sudden huge spike in uploads since about July, waaaay above normal. It could be Windows 10 if you use it:

http://www.computerworld.com/article...bandwidth.html

Turned out I had my settings auto-set to allow windows to "commandeer" my upload bandwidth to send windows updates to other users, as the article discusses. So I switched it off and we'll see if things go back to normal.

Hope that helps if it doesn't end up being your Apple TV!
