Default Time for a new laptop

My laptop finally paperweighted after about 4 years, so I'm in the market for a new one.

What are some options out there?

My preferences are 17" screen, and not apple.

Just trying to get a few ideas to see what people that know better would recommend.

Any help is appreciated.

What do you use it mostly for, that will help us narrow down choices.

400-900 isn't gonna get you much. But I guess it depends on what you use it for.

Basically just word documents, editing programs and things like AutoCAD

Not really much for gaming or anything like that, but a semi decent graphics card would help (for autocad)

I don't need a spectacular machine, like what I could get for $2000 just something that's decent and not overly expensive.

Based on my limited knowledge, I think $2000 will get you significantly more than what you'd need in a laptop. I'm starting to look into maybe getting a new laptop for gaming and according to the memory express website, 2k would get me a top end machine. So you'd probably be looking more in the $1000 range or maybe even less I would think.

EDIT: Looking back, I think I mis-read that last part I responded to. You may disregard my above post....

Laptops have come down a considerable amount in the last couple of years. A 900 dollar laptop can get you something pretty decent.

I figured there were enough help me pick a new computer threads that I would piggy back on this one.

My girlfriend is in need of a new laptop, under $1000 preferably, though she is willing to spend a little on a good machine. The typical home user stuff, internet, email, youtube, teacher stuff.

Obviously anything in her price range will be an upgrade over the 5 year old HP but my thought is that an SSD will probably give her the biggest noticeable boost for what she uses it for. I see Dell has an $1,100 with an mSata drive but other than that it seems to be a hard thing to find. Maybe I'm better off just swapping out hard drives after purchase but then I may be looking at an external drive as well.

Thoughts?

Getting an upgrade like RAM/SSD/Video card from a vendor is generally asking to be robbed.

Get a mid range Dell machine with $2-300 left over and get a SSD online. If you don't mind transferring what little she would have on the new machine after a short time, you can hold off until a good sale, like Boxing day even.

agreed, ram and hard drive should be upgraded after. tons of good laptop options now. I have been enjoying my Lenovo y470p with a 256gb Crucial M4 now. spend under a grand, strong components.

Thanks for the tips, I'm comfortable building my own desktop but have never had to worry much about laptops and since you can't really build your own I wasn't sure where to start.
