Will be interesting to see how the NHL handle this, as the team will need to suspend the player I would think (i.e. player would miss around 2 weeks and the club most likely would not pay the player during this time

The injury excuse is a bit moot when the NHL holds a similar tourney where players could get injured just as easily. While it's not in the middle of the season like the Olympics, even a summer injury has the potential to have pretty big consequences when it's to one of your stars.
Like most thing, the NHL not wanting to go to the Olympics is primarily a money issue.

Sure NHL will want the Olympics to cover the expenses, however schedule is a factor as well.
As for injuries, players would need to buy insurance.

Does anyone else here feel like it isn't the NHL holding out to get something from the IOC/IIHF, but instead holding out to get something from the NHLPA?
I mean, the players (from what I understand) do really want to go, with the NHL seeing not much benefit from going in 2018. 2022 in China is something else, but Korea?
I'm starting to think they are playing coy to get a concession from the NHLPA (like the PA did to get the week off in exchange for the 3-on-3 allstar game). Maybe something like extended the life of the existing CBA - which I think the NHL already floated once and got shot down...???
Anyway, just wondering.

I think the NHL will have to get something from someone (NHLPA/IOC/IIHF) for them to go which is unfortunate.
I don't think they will go. I think some players WILL go though however, and it will end up being some sort of debacle. If the NHL knows how to do anything, it is making something a debacle.

Fan960 doing a segment on this now. NHL would like to be able to use promo material, like the Olympic logo, country and player highlights, video clips on NHL.com or NHL Network. Sounds like a reasonable ask, especially since NBC is the NHL and Olympic broadcast partner

That certainly won't stop a guy like Ovechkin. Didn't he already say he's going anyway whether or not the NHL agrees?

So if the IOC says Ovechkin is ineligible to play… he'll… play anyway? I'd like to see how he pulls that off.

I can't seem to find any proof of the IOC saying the player would be ineligible. Anybody have a link?

Yeah, not sure why the IOC would care about NHL suspensions.

Strictly speaking, it's the Calgary Herald's quality editing, since Postmedia took over the Sun and runs both papers from the same newsroom.
Sad, really.

Monahan and Gio are no doubt in the conversation for Canada's roster IMO. Will obviously be harder for Gio but Monahan is trending towards a third straight 60 point season and is definitely part of Canadian teams going forward.

sure it's money
but that doesn't mean the other issues aren't real too.
The Islanders lost Tavares last time and it essentially ended their season. Many NHL clubs need to keep momentum in seasons to make sure their fan base doesn't just look elsewhere when the olympics are on, and I can see that.
I know we are all supposed to hate the league and Bettman as a starting point, but I personally would have loved to see the CBA extended in order to get the owners to buy in.
Either way I can see it as an issue for sure.

IIRC the IIHF upheld Bertuzzi's suspension from the Moore incident. He couldn't play in Europe during the '04 lockout. But that was egregious incident.
