Default John Hurt, star of The Elephant Man, dead at 77

Pretty sad news. Will always remember him as Winston Smith in the film adaptation of "1984".

No not the War Doctor! Such an amazing actor with so many iconic roles. V for Vendetta and Snowpiercer are a couple films coming to mind right now where he absolutely stole the show in a supporting role.

extremely talented character actor. I remember watching Elephant man and I was stunned by his portrayal of John Merrick.

I also remember him in Alien.

He could play almost anything.

I also loved how he was willing to make fun of himself in Spaceballs.

John Hurt was the kind of actor that we rarely see anymore.

I would say that the next nearest actor is someone like Gary Oldman, just someone who could do anything and it would be natural and seamless. He just had incredible talent.

Plus, at least in my experience, you never heard about him. He just went about his business in a classy and professional manner and let the rest fall where it may.

And theres a lot of honour in that. He'll be missed.

RIP.

He's been in a so many movies that I genuinely love. The Elephant Man is a seriously beautiful movie, and he brought so much humanity to the character.

Even if the content isn't of interest, the video is worth watching to hear Hurt read the Kipling poem If.

His best performance might have been as Caligula in I, Claudius. It's hard to portray bat-#### crazy without veering into camp, but he pulled it off.

Just watching the GBBO and Sue made a comment comparing someone's bread to John Hurt's exploded stomach. Too Soon!

The episode aired in the UK like 5 months ago though. Of course Oz is just getting it now.
