I have to think they're writing her out. Perhaps leaving the fight due to grief?
Hm, if not recast then maybe shift a bit of her episode VIII footage to episode IX? Particularly if there's a more emotional scene. Use it as a bit of a sendoff.

I wonder if they do, in certain cases although morbid, have actors perform a "death" scene that would be used in case of the actor's demise in real life.
Was there any outrage when they re-cast Richard Harris as Dumbledore? Granted he wasn't as recognized as Carrie was.
If Carrie's role was going to be a large one in Epi 9. I think re-casting her is the best option.

I don't recall, but Dumbledore was already written into the books, they couldn't simply write the character out of the movies.

They could have tossed a hat and beard on anyone and bamm Dumbledore
I think any actor that stepped in for Carrie would have to have an incredibly thick skin because Star Wars fans can be overly detailed oriented and at times just plain mean.
