Default Upgrading Laptop Harddrive

http://www.amazon.com/Dell-Inspiron-.../dp/B00CEHHTSS

My laptop is Dell - Inspiron 15Z-5523 which has a 32GB mSATA SSD and 500GB harddrive in it.

The 500GB harddrive died so I swapped it with a 128GB SSD drive.

After that the first screen after powering up is "haddrive not detected please reseat it". I'm sure the SSD harddrive is seated properly as I've checked it twice.

In bios, I can see the 128GB SSD and the original 32GB mSATA. What can I do here? I've built many desktop computer but this is the first time I touched a laptop. I'm guessing that perhaps the 32GB mSATA is causing the problem. Thanks.

Is the boot priority set to 128GB SSD first?

And just to confirm, you're getting that error message when booting into Windows installation or does it not go that far at all?

Boot is set to USB drive where I have the windows installation files.

I'm getting the error message on POST, the first screen after powering up. Then I press F2 to get into bios and all the drives are there. That's way before windows installation. Thanks.

Why are you reinstalling Windows? Don't you already have an existing install on the 32GB mSATA?

Press F12 when booting from a Dell to get to the boot menu and look at what options are presented to you. Try booting your existing mSATA drive.

I thought the 32GB mSATA is only a cache drive and don't know the windows installation is in it. I'll go home and check tonight. Thanks.

You might be right. My colleague set up an mSATA drive in his Dell to be the boot but it looks like from the factory, they only intend for it to be a cache drive.

Nevertheless, try F12 and see what comes up and if the new HDD shows up. Then select the optical drive to boot from in that menu.

Reset BIOS options might be worth considering as well?

Cable connecting to Mobo (not SSD side) loose?

Laptops are too compact to have cables. Usually the SATA connectors are directly soldered to board.

Here's your board:

Have you tried the new SSD in another computer to make sure it's working?

I had a weird issue in one laptop where I put in an SSD. SSDs are sometimes a sliver too thin to replace other 2.5" drives and I had to put in a plastic gift card on top of my SSD to get it to seat tightly in the laptop without coming loose from the connector and thusly not working when I put the cover back on.

My laptop has removable cables for the hard drives. My previous ones did not though. I agree that usually they don't have removable cables.

Agree with the testing to ensure the SSD isn't DOA.

Thanks all for your help. I'm not at home but I found out from the above link that Dell's mSata and hard drive are in Raid setting. I didn't change the setting last night so maybe that's where the problem lies.

Problem solved. I have to disable Intel Rapid Respond and change SATA controller to AHCI. I'm happily installing windows now on the laptop. Thanks all who have replied to help.
