Default Temporary/Prepaid Smartphone Data in the US

I've got an unlocked iPhone4 and a Galaxy Nexus that I'd like to use in the States occasionally but I hear that AT&T doesn't offer pay-as-you-go cards with decent data. From what I've heard it sounds like it's better to buy one of their cheap pre-paid phones, preloaded with data, for like $30 or so and just transfer the SIM card to your own phone.

Does anyone have experience with this?

Where are you going in the US?

If T-Mobile has service they have unlimited text and talk and 200mb 3g (2g thereafter) per day for $3/day. Your Nexus is quad band and should work fine on TMob.
