I expect that close to value, based on the numbers.

I think conversely fans have become accustomed to the new overpay early in the carrer for potential. The NHL norm has changed.
It would have been easy to sign him to $2.5 for 3+ years. With this Brad has avoid that trap. He could get bitten later if Ferland hits 2 x 25 goals, but the odds aren't there.
So in the end this is a wise move, it avoids a poisonous arbitration and doesn't pay a nickel over his current worth with near term incentive to excel.
These moves don't make you team but can cap jail you fast.
Great move by doing the right thing and being responsible.

2 additional F's:
Jankowski
One of Shinkaruk/Porier (They are now waiver eligible, so if they perform inre-season, I assume they wont want to put on waivers.)
1 D-Man:
Have to assume Kulak. Have to think they aren't signing someone else here.

Those carry risk but can really keep the cap down long term. If Ferland is going to be seeing substansial time on the first line his ask will be way up in two years.
Poile is always pulling it off in Nashville. Ie Jarnkrok, Ellis, Josi.
|
I'd rather not have Ferland as a long term big money contract as I think it is just as likely that he is off the top line as on it by then. A bottom two line player can't be making $2.5-3M as a winger who doesn't play special teams (assuming someone replaces him as a net presence on PP). I agree that Poile has done well but I'd argue about whether Ferland is a core player. I think he is the type of player that Hawks are constantly trading out.
I love this contract for being the right length to prove whether Ferland is a top six player. I hope he is a top six player as that would give the flames great depth and I love adding a little six to our top line.

I'm confident he will earn every penny of this contract and will hopefully be due for a (big) pay raise in two years. If all goes according to plan I can see him staying long term.

There is no Ferland market for there is only one Ferland.

Good value, I really like Ferland but lessons learned from Bouma. Not concerned about UFA status, if Ferland has a couple 20 goal seasons, that's good for our Flames.

The concern is Ferland becomes a monster power forward and the Flames have a hard time keeping him when he hits UFA in 2 years at 27

I agree and we can assume Tre did too. I'm happy with 2 years. If Ferland thrives and Calgary becomes the team we all think they can be, there is a good chance Ferland will be gone.
He's likely not a core player, and the non- core players on good teams need to be reshuffled from time to time to stay cheap.

This is an extremely fair contract for the Flames. I have even more respect for Ferland agreeing to avoid arbitration and not signing a 2-2.5m per contract.
Treliving made a very Calgary favorable deal.
I am really excited to see what Ferland will do this year.

Has Treliving participated in an arb. hearing yet in his time in Calgary? (Byron, maybe?) His ability to get these things settled before then looks good on him.

I think Bouma went to the Arb hearing but settled before the ruling. I could be wrong though.

Fantastic value but wouldn't have been upset to pay a bit more for an UFA year

I figured 3 x $1.5, so this is right in line. Adding a little AAV and shortening the term by a year.

This statement about Stajan sums it up perfectly. He is an ideal mentor and leader for this club even at his price tag. Not only is he a solid fourth line center who can jump up for a few games on other lines, but he is respected in the room.
Stajan isnt a top 6 anymore, but he is still a solid bottom six player. You consistently hear about the leadership of Gio and Stajan, which is grand. Now the Flames just need to take the "A" off of Brouwer and hand it to Backlund.

Help, save, whatever.

I see this as a great deal. Didn't realize Ferland and Hyman were drafted in the same round in the same draft. Both have similar point totals. Hyman has played less games but also his point totals are inflated by playing with Matthews.
Leafs just signed Hyman to a 4 year 9 million deal.
If Flames fans had to choose for Ferland; do you like the current deal or would you rather Ferland have Hyman's deal?
