That is a lot of scratch for a guy with one good NHL season. I understand the logic, and I'm sure they knew that's what he wanted going in, but if it were me I'd prefer a bridge deal as a GM. Maybe he's the next Eberle.

Eberle? He is already beyond that.
Drouin: 1st playoff year 14 points in 17 games
Eberle: 1st playoff year 1 point in 14 games
And Drouin never played in the playoffs with Mcdavid or even Stamkos.

He was drafted as a center but has been used almost exclusively on the wing in Montreal. When he has been put at center he has struggled.

good deal for Mtl especially if they don't pay the 2nd (its conditional on Serg playing 40 games). Also, Chychrun > Sergachev

Like the trade for both teams, Sergachev will pair nicely with Hedman.
Wonder how many players from Russia or ex-Soviet republics Tampa has now?

He's third in faceoffs per game on that team and 4th in total faceoffs, while sitting at around 12th in average TOI. That seems unlikely for exclusively a winger. Unless his linemate at center is the king of getting tossed out of the faceoff.

But that's my point. Eberle is busting after a couple of impressive seasons before he signed his contract. Regular seasons that surpassed Drouins only good season.
Drouins a fantastic talent but there's risk in that contract for Montreal. Eberle type risk. That is part of the risk in making that deal.

Taking the 4th amount of draws on his team doesn't make him a center. There are plenty of players that take the draw and then play wing. The 12th average in TOI is more telling. I don't know why this is a debate, he played wing all year.
The reason they are looking into trading him is to obtain better center depth.

Not if Sergachev busts or peaks at a #6/7 Dman. He's played 4 NHL games and had underwhelming draft +1 season numbers in junior. Very much a wildcard.
Whereas Drouin is just 22 and is coming off a breakout season (53pts in 73 gms).
Habs win this today and looks like tomorrow as well...

Plus Drouin has all world skill.
He has a very high ceiling. His floor is likely the season he just had.

Help, save, whatever.

Great trade for Montreal.
Bergevin sure isn't afraid to pull the trigger on big deals.
I still think the Habs are mediocre and they are just a playoff team. Not a cup contender.

The Habs are definitely a mediocre team with the best goalie on the planet backing them up.
Pretty clear when they go from 110 points to 82 points and then back to 103 points, and the biggest difference was Price being injured for most of the 82 point season.
Man I wish the Flames could get him somehow.

I think Montreal is the winner of this trade.
Sergachev is a good prospect, but it's way too early to say that he'll reach his top pairing potential. Top pairing defenseman do not grow on trees. You can't draft someone 9th overall, then a year later claim that they are top 2 defenseman.
That said, I also think it's premature to say Drouin will succeed playing center.
This is a lot easier said than done as well.

53 points in 73 games is a decent season but it's not like Druin has Monahan's NHL resume. He's not exactly proven himself. I would say potential for potential was swapped in this trade. What I don't like from Montreal's point of view is that Druin replaces Radulov but I don't see how that makes the team markedly better as they are still too small and soft. If anything the trade solves more issues for the Lightning as they free up salary to sign other key players as well as stockpile another good looking young defenseman and are looking like Nashville east.

All your french named player are belong to us!
What is with this obsession of theirs?
Perhaps they could actually build a contending team without the cultural bias. I still get a chuckle out of the fact that their media was surprised when Rene Bourque didn't know a lick of french.

Shame on his parents though. What non-francophone family names their boy Rene?

It's not an obsession, it's a commitment to a certain culture. A lot of teams have this to a varying degree (including Calgary, who you could say had/have an unhealthy obsession with drafting western Canadian boys, and it's always mentioned when we sign someone from western Canada as if it somehow matters).
A big part of it is the media and fan base, as French Canadians sell really well in that market. Being bilingual is great for media relations. In the end I think it's great for a team to commit to a certain culture and they rarely seem to do it at the cost of team quality. Being French Canadian is an added bonus there, not a requirement.
