Sergachev was a guy I wanted us to draft over Tkachuk/Juolevi and he just helped his team win the Memorial Cup. He's a natural forward who successfully converted to defense, who can skate, shoot, pass, bang. I am glad Tkachuk is better than anyone could have predicted but I still think Sergachev is a stud who is going to have a somewhat slower development path just due to the position he plays and how long he has played it.

Tkachuk was exactly what I thought he would be. There were several fans on here last draft that were talking out of their ass about him

I understand that valuation - I mean, it is so frequently regurgitated whenever a defencemen is even mentioned in a trade rumor after all. It isn't that I don't think top-pairing D-men are valuable. I just happen to think that Sergachev will not be one, and and is more likely to settle into a good second pairing guy. I happen to think that Drouin will end up being an elite player. That's what my post means, rather than having a misunderstanding of said valuation.

I disagree. I didn't want Juolevi and definitely agree Sergachev is a much better defencemen, but I don't see either of them as top-pairing material. He is a nice asset, and I wish the Flames did have him in their system, but I see him as a sure bet for long (and valuable) career on the second pairing. He is better than Juolevi though (I really don't like him as a prospect, however).
I thought Tkachuk was on a different tier than Sergachev though. That is exactly my point on this trade - I feel Drouin is on another tier above Sergachev as well, more than the difference in draft picks showed, and I am a believer it is more important to have good defencemen than good wingers.

Seems like a pretty fair hockey trade. Drouin is a potentially dynamic player, a little further ahead in development, but Sergachev perhaps playing a higher value position. Add in a 2nd rounder and an extra expansion protection spot, and it works well for TB as well.
Edit: Post- Sureloss info. With that cap hit, no way TB was going to sign him. I think Stevie did a good job for TB.

O.K. there has been a lot of talk on whether or not MacTavish has actually done a good job for us, most fans on this board are very basic in their analysis and I feel would change their opinion entirely if the team was successful.

Agree. Maybe too much next two years, but balances out over the six if he turns into that high end 65 plus point winger.

Dreger suggesting that the Habs might try Drouin at center. Reminds me of when the Flames first acquired Tanguay and there was buzz that they were going to make him Iginla's center.

I like this trade for both teams. I despise the Habs, but can't wait to see Drouin and Radulov on the same line. I think he'll do great there.
I like Sergachev but hated that he was with the Habs so I'm excited to see him play for the Lightning. Hopefully he learns a lot from Hedman and morphs into a killer top pairing guy that leaves Habs fans full of tears for years.

Seems like smart management. Draft Galchenyuk, a natural Center, and refuse to play him at the position.
Trade for Drouin, a natural winger, and try to play him off position.

I think Drouin was a centre before he joined the Mooseheads, and converted to wing to play with MacKinnon.

6 year extension already for Drouin, they wasted no time on that. I Didn't see that coming.

Didn't he also centre Ehlers the year after MacKinnon graduated? Pretty sure he played centre a year in junior after being drafted.

Didnt TB try making Drouin a centre so they could have a 1, 2 punch behind Stamkos?

Knowing Tampa Bay, that team will turn Sergachev into a top pairing d-man and draft another Palat with that second.
