I am sure the ask for Tampa from the Flames would have been Tkachuk - no thanks.
Tkachuk or Bennett I guess. And neither would have been a trade worth making IMO unless a high pick came along with it. So just not a fit for either team.

It's a trade you kind of have to jump on if you're Montreal because they win from a value perspective. From a fit standpoint, this would be a much better trade if they still had Subban.

Nope. I'm not. How did you infer that? I commented on the general consensus at the time that Drouin was a problem and that Stevie Y was going to be forced to sell low. Stevie came out looking smarter than everyone else.

I'm kind of sad Calgary did not get Drouin. First time because I smelled a deal, second time because the trade was so reasonable. He'd look great on the Flames protected list, and first line next year. Although I agree with the sentiment that Flames couldn't have offered similar value.

So, not really sure what you're on about.

Because I don't see why one would credit him for getting a great asset out of the Drouin strife when he was part in creating it. It's more of a case that he didn't end up costing himself. In the end he paid a high price to get a good asset. It's a fine trade, but it's not like this is some wizardry.

Well, there's them that make the trade and them that says the trade was easy.

I think he did pretty good. I don't necessarily agree he made the kerfuffle. I seem to recall a certain kid saying he was ready to play damn the coaches.

But however it happened Stevie did fine, and Drouin was had for a reasonable price. I'd expect these two fact to be contradictory.

Only one of them is above 6ft. They're all pretty slight, really.

That is not exactly how I remember things playing out. When Drouin could not get the playing time in TB to which he believed he was entitled after scoring 10 points in 21 games in the 2015-16 season, he sulked like a petulant child, and then refused assignment to the Lightning's AHL affiliate. When Yzerman refused to kowtow to Drouin's demands after several weeks of sitting, he finally reported to the Syracuse Crunch, and was sufficiently underwhelming through his first several games. To his credit, he worked his way back in to a position to get a recall during the playoffs, and eventually became an approximation of the player the Lightning believed they were drafting in 2013.

Did Yzerman "look stupid" for playing hardball with a talented young player who was clearly struggling with various aspects of the NHL game? Or was it Drouin and his agent rather who appeared foolish for believing they were entitled to something that Drouin had not yet—but was evidently capable of earning?

Drouin eventually got his playing time. Yzerman retained the value of an asset, and significantly also demonstrated that he knew what he was doing the whole time.

?

Drouin is 5'11", Galchenyuk is 6'2", and Gallagher while short is built like a tank.

Those 3 would make a talented, pesky line for sure. Hard to play against. But they aren't imposing.

It is a secondary need compared to acquiring a starting goaltender and a #4 defenseman. All in good time.

Drouin is a sexy player but Sergachev in the long-run will be the better player.

Bennett doesn't solve their problem as he also would need to be protected - which in that case they probably just keep and protect Drouin.

Would have had to be Tkachuk.

I didn't think that Sergachev held that much value, or didn't think that Drouin's value was that low. I really think Drouin is still going to be an incredibly productive player. I think Montreal wins this trade. Sergachev is definitely a nice asset though. I am just very high on Drouin I guess, but I really do believe he is going to be a beast production-wise.
