Default How to get rid of Woodpockers

So building off the Voles thread, anyone have experience dealing with Woodpockers (intentional miss-spelling as the correct one is auto filtered)?

Cute little buggers dug a massive hole in my front porch in the last week and the wife is furious.

I see there are visual deterants, but frankly I don't want that hanging off the front of my house. I also see these noise makers:

https://www.amazon.com/Bird-X-BirdXP.../dp/B000ALEW4E

Looks like reviews are mixed. I love birds but if they keep this up a pellet gun maybe the next step.

Any advice?

I have had wood######s causing damage to my acrylic stucco wall for about four years now. Nothing works - I've tried everything. BirdX works until they move 10 feet to the side of it. Pinwheels, fake owls, noise, spraying with water. Nothing works.

Don't go for the pellet gun as killing them is illegal. They are a protected migratory bird species.

Good luck. What I've found works is the second you hear them, chuck or slingshot some gravel at them. It's non-lethal but eventually they get annoyed enough to not come back. PM me if you want more details.

We have them too, I just repair the damage and move on. You can't kill them under any circumstances.

I don't think you are allowed to use the pellet gun woodpeckers nor attempt to poison them. Apparently they are protected according to this article.

There are noise maker, net and deterrent coatings and sprays according to this article though if you don't like the visual deterrents.

Regarding the swear filter, the cool people are able to not have the word woodpecker filtered.

Or maybe that I just added the exception to the filter.

Same thing with me. You just have to keep scaring them away. Now I have chickadees pecking at my window battens!!

I have nuthatches trying to open up the tiny pilot holes that stupid Downy woodpecker drills -- frustrating. It gets bad every spring when they are trying to nest.

Common around Calgary are Hairy and Downy Woodpeckers. Also, Flickers.

Had a couple of theses show up in my backyard recently. Was quite a surprise as I don't think I'd ever seen them before.

Who knew putting up a bird feeder would attract various species of birds?

They don't really eat seed, but if you offer suet in the winter months they'll come everyday.

Flickers are currently tormenting my folks in north. The drilling on the telephone pole fine, but occasionally they'll hammer on the fireplace or furnace vents.

I tried putting out a suet feeder on their back fence to draw them away from the house, but it just attracted magpies. The flickers ignored it completely.

Someone under 18, a slingshot, and plausible deniability.

We've had "Woody" hammering on our furnace/fireplace vents for years. They come back every Spring and typically go away after a couple of months. We've thought of putting a spike mat on top of the vent but I'm thinking that might just mean they migrate to the siding. I'd rather have them denting in the top of the vent than burrow in my siding.

Apparently the condo complex by the Shag golf course is a popular haunt for them and the condo buildings have had a bunch of damage over the years.

You'll have to move house, that's the only solution.
