This is one of the few times where a subject has never really been brought up in public before.

One of the big problems with this whole thing.

She lied about her ethnicity when she applied to and was accepted on the Spokane Police Board.

The Police Boards ask about race because race is one of the central issues in getting proper representation and balance on the board.

Did she lie anywhere else on legal documents?

If you again compare it to transgender issues, that gets complicated.

Transgendered people for a long time had to lie about their gender in numerous legal documents, but we now view those people as discriminated against, not criminals, liars or scammers. Making the same claim about someones race is not much of a leap.

As someone who has lived as a black woman for over a decade Dolezal probably has more than enough personal experience required, and being a well-known pro-black activist with solid credentials should I think count for something.

...but then there's the problem that if we accept that changing your race is possible, we would soon probably see white students claiming to be of a minority race to get affirmative action benefits.

This is the biggest issue of all here.

I don't see this as comparable to the transgendered issue.

Saying transrace to me sounds completely made up as a excuse of convenience, unless you see Steve Martin's the Jerk as a documentary.

If "we" can change our race, perhaps affirmative action benefits go the way of the Dodo.

At the end of the day, it doesn't affect me how she identifies, but as CC mentioned, I would be concerned if she accessed benefits for a race other than hers.

Dolezal resigned today

http://www.cnn.com/2015/06/15/us/was...acp/index.html

Quote:
(CNN)The president of the NAACP Spokane, Washington, chapter Rachel Dolezal has resigned, according to a letter from her which was posted Monday on the NAACP Spokane Facebook page.

Dolezal did not address allegations that have landed her and her family in the national spotlight over the past several days. Her parents, who are white, allege that she has been lying and presenting herself as black when she is not.

The story ignited debate over race and identity and blew up social media.

I think the difference is subtle, but with transgendered people, I get the impression that they are trying to be who they are. With a "transrace" person, they are trying to project who they wish they were.

I seriously doubt for example, that a heterosexual male would start living a transgendered lifestyle because he wants to be accepted in that community.

I agree with some of the other posts that challenge the very idea of race. I don't like it as a biological distinction, however due to historical relations between peoples of different races (as defined however arbitrarily by the powers that be), it has become politically important to understand and respect the distinctions. Having white people identify as black undermines many of the social justice issues black people face.

Social media vigilantes, once again.
If this would have happened in 1990, this lady could have pretended Jewish/Mexican/Irish and no one would have noticed/cared.

From what I understand sexual preference varies amongst the transgendered although I get your point.

She lied........multiple times. Lied about her race, lied about having a black father, lied about having black children. There's also some hate mail she apparently received that had no stamp or time stamp on it and some people wonder if she planted it there herself.

She probably meant well for the most part, but she's a pathological liar.

Liberals have no problem with Bruce "Caitlyn" Jenner, but are up in arms about someone pretending to be black.

Weird

I watched her interview this morning on CNN, and she sounded completely crazy. Maybe reality crashed in, or she had too much pride in declaring herself the first and only Transrace person.

But she just came across as a bit nutty.

I'm sure her teaching gig is going to go away too.

I don't know but aren't universities and colleges tracked based on how many minorities that they hire?

Makes you wonder if she would have got her job if she was white.

If NAACP hiring policy is any indicator, likely not. That said, I do not know if any transracial applicants have ever tried.

No one should be mad at her for believing she is black. People should (rightfully) be mad that she lied to get where she was, even if she did a lot of good. She should have wore it like a badge.

Ed Lover had a great call-in session regarding this yesterday, and there were a lot of good points touched on. It's on the XM app if anyone has it.

First we had trans-gender, now we have trans-race. How long until the first trans-species person?

First?

All of these things have existed for like, ever. Some just have more legitimacy than others. Trans-species people (or, as they call themselves "furries") have even had a 2003 episode of CSI revolve around them.

Don't google furries at work FYI. It's more of a sexual thing than a "this is the real me!" thing.
