Sad day indeed. A true professional and a face you can't easily forget looking at him all these years on TV. RIP.

I shared a restroom with him at the White Spot in the NE, in the spring of 2009. I was talking on my phone while using the urinal. He looked at me disgustedly, I no longer talk on my phone in the washroom. (True story, I didn't immediately recognize him, my GF told me who he was when I left the restroom )
RIP Mr Quinn, thank you for the life lesson.

Had the chance to meet him when the company I worked for did a sponsorship with Hockey Canada. He was a big guy in person, and had a monster handshake. Seemed like a genuine person and was friendly and approachable.
RIP

He looked really poor when the Canucks were honouring that 94 team last year, this isn't too shocking.
Still sad as hell.

I actually thought he didn't look that great when he was coaching the Oilers. He was a good hockey man and will be missed.
RIP Pat Quinn

He's the one guy who ever managed to get a lick on Bobby Orr.
He was a coach who had a fair bit of personality to him.
Condolences to his family, 71 is still pretty young for someone to go.

I have been listening to the radio today from TO and from Vancouver and the stories about him bring up a lot of memories that he was apart of. He has done a lot for the sport of hockey and he will be missed.
None of them will be as important or memorable as the 2002 Olympic gold medal game, that was a great day.
RIP Pat!

By the wishes of himself and his family.
What we're finding out today is that, atleast among Vancouver sports writers, this has been known about for some time and they've just respected his and his family's wishes and kept it under wraps.
So expect Botchford to tweet it soon.

A sad day for the hockey world in particular and the world in general.
About four or five months ago, my friend took his mom to Vancouver General Hospital for some tests and saw Pat there, as a patient. It was apparent to my friend that he was quite ill. He told me about this and we agreed that it would be inappropriate to post this news on the Internet. Given the number of people who must have known about this "secret", it is amazing that such news was largely kept quiet and, as Blaster 86 suggests, speaks to the level of respect that Pat commanded in the community.
I'm dating myself here but I first met Pat at the Richmond Arena [suburban Vancouver] when I was a youngster in the mid 60s. He was then a young defenceman [in his early 20s] playing for the Seattle Totems of the old professional WHL. His team was in town to play the Canucks and my friend found out that they had scheduled a practice in Richmond. We hopped on our bicycles and rode to the arena, hoping to get close up to the Totems' legendary Guyle Fielder. There were very few people at the arena and we were able to set up right at one of the players' benches, where Pat was sitting at the end during a break.
Pat was a great guy and struck up a short conversation with the two awestruck young fans. ["Do you boys play hockey? What team do you play for? What positions do you play?", etc]. Needless to say, we were thrilled that a professional hockey player would talk to us. At one point in the practice, Pat broke his stick and skated over and handed it to me. It was a Northland, with the name "Quinn" stencilled thereon. The stick was still usable and I cut it down to size and used it for street hockey before it finally wore out. To this day, I regret not having kept that stick.
Pat was a great hockey man and a great man, period. RIP, Pat. You left us far too early and will be greatly missed.

This came as a shock to me, I had no idea he wasn't doing well.
One of the few (and possibly the only) people to be a part of the Flames, Oilers, and Canucks organizations. Also did great work with Hockey Canada.
Truly a sad day for the hockey community. RIP Pat.

Maybe I am missing something and can't find it but is he not in the Hall of Fame? He was the HOF chairman of the board but not inducted?
