I love Calgary - I just want help getting through it as fast as possible.
Hoping I can get some advice. I'm making a Kijiji run down to Granum from Red Deer that will probably happen around rush hour time. What is the fastest north/south way through Calgary? What is happening with Stoney Trail down in the SE? Can I take it all the way and if not, what is your advice? Thanks Calgary Puckers.

You cannot take Stoney Trail all the way down right now, it terminates at 17th avenue SE.

Deerfoot is your best bet - even if you are going to run into traffic. You can kick off at Blackfoot and try taking that up to Southland then go back on to Deerfoot - but I don't know if it will actually save you much time.

Stick to Deerfoot, when you hit the bottleneck after Glenmore Trail near Southland Drive, keep in the far left lane to avoid the cluster of people merging off Southland. Don't let anyone cut over.

There is no fast way at rush hour. You could take Stoney, then head east on number 1 to 791 which is just past Chestermere and then down it to 22x. But by the time you go that far out of your way you can probably crawl down Deerfoot and end up at the southern end at the same time.

Ok, thanks for the advice. Deerfoot it is, I guess. When is the afternoon rush hour approx. and when is it at it's worst? I'm kind of hoping to be in Granum around 5:30pm.

If you need to make up for lost time stuck in traffic use Deerfoot since the leg from anywhere in Airdrie to downtown is only 10 minutes.

You should probably plan to be entering Calgary at around 3:00pm. That should miss the very worst of rush hour but you will probably be in Granum a bit early. I've found Deerfoot is the worst from about 3:30-5:30pm.

Ok, thanks Jacks. I'll head through around 3. Rather kill some time in Okotoks sipping on an iced cap watching the world go by than inching along in traffic.
Not that anyone has asked or cares, I will be picking up a much rustier version of one of these. I'm as excited as my kids are at Christmas!

I believe you can take the ring road down to 17 Ave SE, then skip over to 84 street, which will take you down to 114 Ave (I thought you used to be able to go all the way to 22X, but google maps is not letting me do that for some reason). In any event, that will get you back onto Highway 2. It may not save you much (if any) time though -- I agree that going a little early to beat the traffic on Deerfoot is the best option.
EDIT: apparently 84 street is no good -- please disregard

84th now has closures. There's one at Glenmore for sure- maybe more. Not a good route anymore.

I wouldn't recommend this, as there is just too much construction on the SE ring road going on in that area and things tend to back up. Especially if there is any train traffic going through. It will be nice once the SE leg of Stoney is done though.
