Released in 1994, I don't know how this record didn't sell in the millions. Friend of mine, music geek, turned me onto it several years ago. Was a big seller in the UK. Great from start to finish. Running This Family and Cutie are both probably in my top 500 favorite songs of all time. Outstanding lyrics..... "She looks more like you than you did." Great stuff.

If we are talking about high profile musicians, I would go with John Frusciante's "Smile from the Streets You Hold". In typical artist fashion, he released it and then quickly pulled it off the shelves.

While most everyone knows of The Real Thing and Angel Dust, King for a Day...Fool for a Lifetime is the forgotten FNM work of brilliance. I think even more than Angel Dust its the blueprint for what became Nu-Metal, and "####oo for Caca" is easily one of the most frightening, terrifying songs ever. The whole album is really a showcase for the remarkable vocal abilities of Mike Patton, featuring everything from death metal screechs and insane ramblings to smooth crooning and gospel.

But then I realized that might fall into the 'critical gems that everyone loves now' category.
So instead I'll go with Joe Henry's brilliant, dark, moody, jazz-influenced masterpiece, Tiny Voices. Joe Henry gets far more acclaim for his production work than his own recordings, but his own albums are all excellent, and Tiny Voices is one of my favorite listening experiences for accompanying a late night whiskey.

I still consider The Real Thing their best work but this album is definately underrated.
The critics didn't like this one overall, but I don't give a s***. This is one great album that I can listen to over and over again (for those that don't know the cover - Linkin Park - A Thousand Suns):
