Also, the John Scott thing really masked the fact that 3 on 3 for 60 minutes actually isn't that good.

You can dislike the art but the way people are acting about it makes calgary seem like a backwater hillbilly hicktown in the province of Hickington.

"You're complaining about something that was really expensive, ugly and that you dont like! You bunch of hicks!"

I dont even know what to say about that comment. Come on corporatej, what about you? If you got screwed in a deal would sit there and eat their #### with a smile on your face and not utter a word of complaint?

If Calgarians can't deal with the fact that each of us will hate a quarter or more of the installations, we should probably just scrap the whole program.

A quarter? Whoa man...

There are like 2 pieces of art in this entire City that people almost unanimously hate, the Blue Circle and now our Welded Rocks. Maybe 3 if you want to count the Peace Bridge, but its also a bridge and serves to move people from one side of the river to the other in addition to its artistic purposes.

I think a quarter is rather high actually and negates your opinion that we're all a bunch of philistines.

I guarantee you that I could walk into a Modern Art museum and hate waaaay more than a quarter of the exhibits. As far as it goes I think we as a City are doing pretty well.

Why, Cliff? Do you really believe that a nine-person Public Art Board of politically-connected appointees have a substantially better taste and wisdom than general population? You are by far one of the more-reasoned posters here than many. I am genuinely curious, where is such distrust in people rooted?

I think more would feel the same about this one, if more people knew about it.

Okay...but isnt it at the Dump? The level of expectation is a tad lower there.

So we paid all that money and they already threw it out? Sounds inefficient.

If this is what is produced out of these "installations", then by all means...scrap the program and scrap it now.

It's an obnoxiously huge waste of money when its apparent the vast majority of the people paying for it....hate it.

It's a drop in the bucket of the cities operating budget. A traffic light can cost as much.

Not saying a like it, not saying it's worth it, not saying the program can't be alerted. But lets a) cut the rhetoric and b) don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

Public arts is important, but the city needs to tweak it again. Besides simple beautification council needs to stop trying these things near highways.

Yes. I think the general population is generally stupid an uncultured. Don't believe me.

Now THIS is art! It juxtaposes clean, straight lines and symmetry against the chaos inherent in a rusting metal. It presents an ever-changing relationship among the components as you move around it, first appearing as a unified and symmetrical family, standing together, then morphing into a metaphor for the child striking out on his own. The monoliths, visible from miles around, highlight the centrality of the wetlands as both our origin and a symbol of our future in an ever more resource-starved world.

Ok, but seriously...this one had some effort put into it. The "rocks hung in girders" is a lot harder to appreciate.

Those Sentinels remind me of Stonehenge, somehow. Like them.

Those actually look kinda cool. But holy ####. $1.57M? That's insane. Someone's walking around with $1.5M in their pocket.
