Calgary Flames | The Good, Meh, and Ugly
Yes, this has been an upsetting season for the Calgary Flames, but I thought it would be a good idea to have a thread for this as there seems to be a lot of cross discussion of the players in many threads. So here is where we can just generalize it. So who are the Good, Bad, and Ugly of this team and what would it take for them to get back to where we once were? (trades, work ethic, etc)
Anyway, this is what I think of the players so far. Let us know what your opinion is on the players/organiztion this season.
(Let me know if anything needs changes! I will edit the categories.)
Good
_________
Johnny Gaudreau
Sean Monahan
Michael Frolik
Mark Giordano
Sam Bennett
Joe Colborne
Dougie Hamilton
Deryk Engelland
Matt Stajan
Ladislav Smid
TJ Brodie
Meh
_________
Jiri Hudler
David Jones
Micheal Ferland
Josh Jooris
Calgary Flames Coaching Staff
Calgary Flames Management
Ugly
_________
Dennis Wideman
Mason Raymond
Kris Russell
Michael Backlund
Brandon Bollig
Karri Ramo
Jonas Hiller
Joni Ortio
IR: Lance Bouma
What are our missing pieces?
Talking about management side, I think this is the time when you need to shake up the roster and introduce a younger team and fix the problems that are not helping. Not all of this is possible but if we were to blow up the team and keep players that were in the good, our lineup would be...
Colborne-Monahan-X
Gaudreau-Bennett-Frolik
X-X-X
X-Stajan-X
Giordano-Brodie
X-X (Hamilton can fill in this second pair role)
(Engelland/Smid)-Hamilton
X
X
Overall this slow start to the season helps put in perspective that our rebuild isn't all perfect and we still have many holes in our lines. The good thing is that our prospect pool is deep and they're is potential for young guns to step it up.

Ortio has looked the worst out of the three goalies imo.

All three goalies should be under "Ugly".

sign Glencross to a pto....he would probably have more jump than 90-% of this team. I swear, they are trying to get Heartly fired.
I cant even watch a full game, so upsetting.

Hamilton, Frolik and Bennett belong under a new category 'Awful'.
Wideman hasn't at worst 'meh'.

Bench the uninspiring players, Hamilton and Money. Two decent sized players who will not use their size at all.
Money will not hit at all, kind of sad when Johnny hits more that Money.

Needless to say I am not happy with this team right now. Time to step back and take a break from hockey for a few weeks I think.

This thread isn't just about the 11 games.. It's the fact that the way they are playing can continue and I just wanted show the best players of the team from the worst; and areas that need improvement for the better future.

I hope this is sarcasm...
Hamilton I would say has been meh. He's picked it up a bit recently.
Frolik has also been meh. Does a lot of good things but needs to start putting up points.
Bennett awful? I don't know if we've been watching the same games. Bennett has been awesome.

I think it would look like this:
Good: Gaudreau
At times good, mostly meh: Bennett, Colborne, Hudler
Meh: Brodie, Engelland, Ferland, Frolik, Jones, Jooris, Stajan
Ugly: Everyone else

When a Flames fan like me watched a couple Edm games and say wow this team have some good players and is more fun to watch than our Flames! That is when a few changes need to be made.

Stajan's contract is terrible. Even though he's been fine as a 4th liner, he probably has quite a big of negative trade value. When someone's contract harms the team as much as his, I don't think they deserve to be classified as "good".
Same goes for Smid.
I would add Huska as a "bad". Hardly any development has occurred with him as coach.
Other than that, I agree.

I think Frolik was good for the first games but since then he has been pretty invisible I would probably move him to the meh group.
Hamilton and Engelland get moved to the meh section as well. Hamilton would have clear been in the bad section so its nice to see him moving up but still not enough to be in the good category. Engelland is doing what is asked of him but for me that still only ever keeps him in the meh category which is just fine for him.
Gio definitely in the meh category and closer to bad than good for me. He was really bad last night and probably saved from criticism with how awful the Wideman-Russell pairing.
