Default Dealership License and Registration Requirements

Just bought a pre-owned vehicle from a Ford dealership in Edmonton.

They're requesting I present my license and registration which I questioned them on; they indicate that this is their requirement. Payment has been made in full.

Having purchased several vehicles in my lifetime, a few from dealerships, I've never had to present this to them.

Hoping to solicit any CP users who work at dealerships or those who have purchased a vehicle recently.

Anyone ever hear of this as a policy?

That's been the policy the last two times I bought a vehicle from a dealership.

Why wouldn't they request proof you can drive and proof you've registered the vehicle in order to take it off their lot?

And what issue could you possibly have with them verifying that information?

NM, I see that payment has been made in full...

Are you towing it off the lot? All vehicles operated on public roads must be registered and insured.

Yeah, its kind of standard as far as I know. Moreso with a financed vehicle. They may also ask about insurance, butif you gotit registered would mean you have insurance.

and dammit, wheres Pylon when you need him?

I thought you had 10 days to register a vehicle in Alberta?

Regardless, I was asked for my license when I bought my truck. Seemed fairly sensical.

You have 14 days to transfer registration to a new vehicle. You need registration in order to get a plate unless you are going to transfer from one to the other. Having a licence and insurance are dealership liability issues, since you are not financing.

Thanks for the info. I guess there's liability in everything nowadays. They are delivering the vehicle to me in Calgary and made it sound that they would only deliver the vehicle if I had these two things in place. I already have insurance, though as mentioned, I have 14 days to transfer registration with a bill-of-sale.

Altogether, I found it unusual. I bought a vehicle from Lexus of Edmonton in 2011 and I recall arranging this after purchase.

Thanks to all for the info.

Edit: Silly me. They are asking for Registration and Insurance. Should have caught this in the OP.
