Default Stajan has some advice for the youngsters

Quote:
“We had a very veteran team and I was a young guy, and I remember Gary Roberts saying: ‘Guys, we have a chance to do something special here. Let’s really enjoy this and take advantage of it, because you don’t know when you’re going to be back in this position,’ ” Stajan recalled. “That’s what he said about his career, because he won in his second year in Calgary, and he said the older guys said that to him and Joe Nieuwendyk. So they were kind of saying the same thing. Nieuwendyk was my roommate that year, so he reminded me.”

With all the makings of a blood-and-guts leader, Tkachuk will one day be telling up-and-coming teammates not to take this opportunity for granted.

Just like Lanny told Nieuwendyk and Roberts.

Just like they told Stajan.

Just like Stajan will stress to him.

“As a young guy, you think it’s going to happen every year,” Stajan said. “But it’s hard to get to playoffs and then when you get there, you have to try to take advantage and make something happen because you don’t know how many chances you’re going to get. I mean, you just look at the fact this will be our second time in the playoffs in the last seven years, so it’s not like it happens every day. And I think with the young team that we have, that’s an important message.

It's baffling to me how much we won the Phaneuf trade...

Stajan is so awesome.

Man what a terrible post. We did not win that trade all we got was an overpaid 4th line centre. Stajan never even hit 40pts in a season in Calgary. He did score a massive goal in the 2015 playoffs but has largely been a poor cap hit and "good in the room guy"

Phanuef did not pan out in Toronto but let's not pretend like the Flames won that deal.

Stajan got the series clinching goal against Vancouver a couple years ago. That alone is worth it.

We traded a first pairing defenceman, a 4th line forward and a decent prospect at the time for an overpaid 4th line center, an inconsistent scorer, a decent young defenceman and a 4th liner. Cancel out Sjostrom and Aulie with Mayers and White and we have Phaneuf for Stajan and Hagman.

Phaneuf, overly criticized in Toronto i get it (although most Toronto players are criticized), but he became their captain, had some good seasons and was their top defenceman far and away. We got a guy who has been our 3rd/4th line centre at a very very steep price.

Dion did cause some issues here, but you can't take away what he could do on the ice. So no, we did not win that trade.

We definitely did NOT win the trade but trading Phaneuf away was an addition by subtraction.

That being said, we should have have gotten A LOT more than we did for him. And no Darryl quantity is not greater than quality.

The Phaneuf trade was a lose lose in my mind.

I really like Stajan but he's way overpaid. Phaneuf was never able to build off his ELC years.

I agree. The initial result was Calgary was totally fleeced but in retrospect it wasn't nearly as bad because Phaneuf had his best years in Calgary and was overpaid by Toronto which hurts the perception of him.

Calgary ultimately lost due to the fact the value on a trade would have been far better if done in the summer and not a knee jerk mid season deal after a lengthy losing streak with a bottom feeding team.

A thread about the team getting ready for the playoffs, and we are re-hashing the Phaneuf trade.

OK, whatever...
