I have two reactions:

2. Is this 'real'? Like what the heck is this?

so do you think the game designers actually built the level with someone doing that in mind? Or is that just someone finding a crazy way to exploit the level?

I'm sure it's a custom built level done on an emulator, I've seen these kinds of levels before where the idea was to make a level that played itself, just not one set to music and synced like this.

In this video mario is never actually controlled by the controller, he's always reacting to the environment by bumping into things, bouncing off of things, etc.

I don't think it is, I think the music in it is fairly recent (at least I recognize part of it).
