Mike Keenan to coach Chinese KHL team
MOSCOW -- Mike Keenan is taking charge of a Chinese hockey team.
The longtime NHL coach has been hired to lead Chinese club Kunlun Red Star, which competes in the Russia-based Kontinental Hockey League. Kunlun's aim is to develop Chinese players as the country builds a national team to compete at its first home Winter Olympics in 2022.

Another "retirement job" where he can basically mail it in.
Iron Mike is long dead.

I'm sure that would be an awesome gig for a long-time NHL coach.
You still get to coach (which is presumably your passion) but you're not in the NHL dealing with the pressure.

Keenan wasn't my favorite either but he had that 08/09 team playing really well and if it wasn't for a boatload of ridiculous injuries they should have won the division and made it into at least the 2nd round of playoffs.

If the Chinese put the same effort and money into hockey as the other sports they've decided to compete in, they will be a force within a short period of time.

I am curious, which anthem is gonna be played at the games over there?
I mean, here US & Canada anthems are played and it could be already a little insulting to all players from Europe. But you can somehow explain that as an established NHL tradition/history etc.
What about KHL? Is only Russian anthem played? I should watch a stream of one game from start to find out. But I have strong doubts that China is going to allow ONLY Russian anthem played at their arena.

I actually agree. No doubt in my mind the best team we had comming out of the lockout and our 04 run was the first year back with Darryl as coach, followed by the 2 seasons with Mike Keenan.
It's always debatable and I would actually agree with anyone who would say Keenan actually got the best Flames rosters on paper from that time frame, but the team certainly got worse following him getting canned. I also think a lot of that was the Keenan was the only coach we had that Darryl was able to get on the same page with as a GM and build the team appropriately for, so that impacts too.
Kind of tough to compare GG or Hartley because they were / are coaching a very different team and in a very different team lifecycle point than Keenan did.
But as far as coaches that coached the "Iginla / Kipper" Flames in their prime, I'd rank as follows:
- D. Sutter
- Keenan
- B. Sutter
- Playfair

My guess is, like here, the anthems for where the two playing teams are from.
