I've got a few questions about tripods.
While in Florida on vacation earlier this month I bought a cheap tripod from target. I knew it wasn't going to be a great tripod, but was just looking to set the timer so I can get photos with kate. The first one the mount broke within 10 mins. I returned it and got the more expensive one ($30 http://www.target.com/p/targus-tg-66...#guest-reviews)
but the base came loose on this one too, I just used some jbweld and put it back on and will end up using it for my chronometer for testing out my reloads in my rifle.
My question is, I'm looking for a decent tripod that isn't going to break the bank.

Look for something in the 140-180 range, definitely not anything even close to the 30 dollar range.

I lucked out last year, and I got mine at London Drugs for $50. It was mispriced, and was supposed to be $150. There are a couple things to look for though. One that can switch between Landscape and Portrait, a quick connect mount, and as trivial as it seems, the weight hook comes in quite handy to keep your camera steady

Define your bank.
Gitzo carbon fiber tripods are the best on the semi-pro/advanced amateur market and they range from very light to very heavy-duty. They will cost you anywhere between $600 to $1,200 new at Vistek. Or, if you are patient, you can find a used one on e-bay for half-price. Traveler and Mountaneer series are super good.

I like this shot! Where is it taken from? (I think it's gotta be the ski hill side of the road, but is it a specific trail/viewpoint?)

Thanks!
There's a trail that starts from the Chateau Lake Louise up towards a tea house. It seems most people stop there but you can keep going on a trial towards the Little Beehive. It's shot on that trail back towards the tea house (in the opposite direction from the Chateau). In fact, the photo below it is shot nearby just in the opposite direction.

Whoops. For some reason I thought I was looking at Little Beehive, but it's Big Beehive in the photo. I've done the Little Beehive hike.

Near where I'm working right now:
Had to amp up the ISO so it isn't nearly as sharp as I was hoping for.

Quick question about where most of you guys usually purchase your lens from. Was looking into grabbing the Sigma 10-20mm and noticed that was a lot cheaper even with taking shipping and customs clearance from B&H. Just wondering if there was anything I should be aware about in regards to warranty, whether the B&H customs clearance actually covers all the custom fees etc.
And to contribute to the thread while being a long time lurker:

I sent you a PM regarding Sigma 10-20.
I collect lenses, mostly Nikon, Hasselblad, Carl Zeiss and Leica-R. In general, when buying an expensive Nikon AF lens over $1,000, it is much safer to buy it from a local store, because of the potential warranty issues. I prefer Saneal Cameras; their prices are usually same or better than Vistek, although Vistek is a much nicer store with a better selection of other photography related stuff. Canadian warranty on Nikon lenses is better than US. B&H does a lot of online business and, sometimes can beat Canadian prices, when US promos are in–place. But, warranty can be tricky. You have to obtain warranty service through them.
Sigma has a niche for wide-angle lenses (8mm fisheye, 8-16, 10-20), but they are fairly expensive, when purchased new locally ($700 to $900). I would recommend buying them used.

tripod question -
Are all tripod clip in heads the same? I just got a cheapo polaroid tripod and it came with an extra camera clip, would these be usable on other tripods?
Also - I am looking for one more used tripod if anybody is looking to sell one.
Also note - I am broke.
