Thanks. I am finding it difficult to get a good pic myself becuase there is too much light around me. I am also starting to think that 30sec at ISO 1600 is too much with so much light around from the street lights.
I will be trying several more times before I leave. I want to see some other colors as well!

Yeah 30 secs at iso 1600 is going to get you a lot of noise as well. I would step it down much lower. It's mostly trial and error when it comes to these shots. I don't know what kind of camera you are using, but I would also shoot it in raw.

Neeper, am using a program called Neat Image to correct the noise of the high ISO, it seems to work pretty good.
I will be cutting down the ISO regardless next time becuase every picture is overexposed. Maybe 800 or even 400 would still work out.
James, I see them almost every night, sometimes better than others of course.

Wait until mid May or June, I know in northern Sask some nights in late spring the northern lights are in colour, now that is really cool.

Ok best night yet....in a span of 4-5 nights I have made some great strides with these lights! Shot at 30 seconds and ISO 400:
