If they don't trade one of the core kids then by far their best assets are their draft picks. They are always very high. They could dangle them to bring in some help, but that could really backfire on them.

On my way home I ended listening to a bit of the Oilers coverage on XM. Even the Boston Pizza commercials up there have embraced the losers mentality as they were bragging about being the "first overall pick" of restaurants.

Remember all the hype that surrounded the Justin Schultz courting and signing? That seems so long ago now. If NHL teams knew then how bad he was going to be defensively in the NHL I don't think it would have been such a circus.

Agreed, apparently their asking price for Yakupov is quite a bit, so he won't be moving.
At this rate, their first rounder might be Ekblad.

the difference being that buffalo is rebuilding. The oilers were so bad that their rebuild took them worst to bottom five. Looking at the oilers team this year, they clearly over achieved last year.

Honestly, Edmonton should fire Lowe and probably MacTavish. Then they should start all over (again) by dealing Eberle, RNH and Yakupov for young talent that is close to those three but haven't been corrupted by Edmonton's country club, no consequences atmosphere.

Edmonton's problem is with its core players. They don't believe in playing a 200 ft game. The problem is, these young guys are touted as the solution not the problem and they always will be. Heck they just got big extensions.
They'll continue to tinker and swap out pieces around the core looking for that magic fix, much like the Flames did 2006-2011. They'll never find it because their biggest problem, is the one thing they'll never fix.

So, Oilers offer to swap 1sts with the Flames this year AND next (gotta do both). Do you take it?

They could draft Ekblad and McDavid back to back and they'd find a way to be terrible.
It's just a black hole for hockey players right now. They need to wipe themselves clean of the 80's alumni and get some people in there that know how to build and run a hockey team. Thankfully with Katz and Lowe running things it probably won't change much.

That Chicago/Ottawa game was awesome. West wins again.. bunch of sissies out east.. Edmonton should be in the eastern conference...

F you.
Sucks that Ottawa finally strings together, not one goal, but five and we still lose. Really tough to watch them right now. Very frustrating.

He's skinny, but he's 6'2". Better a slight forward than a slight defenceman.
I'd then trade Yakupov and the first round pick this year for immediate defensive help.

I almost can't believe they are headed for a 3 wins 11 losses again. I hope they never fire Lowe, he sets the tone for their organization and is the root of all their problems. They have such a long history of overvaluing their players and slotting guys in over their heads on reputation that I don't know if they'll ever be able to make a trade to get some of the depth they actually need and save face.
If they are going to cash in on Yakupov for instance, they need to forget where he was drafted - it's meaningless now. What kind of player is he today - it makes no difference if he went 100th overall or 1st. He's a solid prospect who has a big upside, but I don't think he'd be in the top 5 in this past year's draft, so move him for help.
You won't get a kings ransom, and he's not worth it, but you could get a couple solid players who will help your team move forward faster.
