Fire & Ice Girls: Sexist Anachronism?
I read a letter in the Calgary Herald today, titled Fire and Ice Girls a sexist anachronism. So I looked up the definition of anachronism, which is:
Quote:
a thing belonging or appropriate to a period other than that in which it exists, especially a thing that is conspicuously old-fashioned.
|
From the article in the Herald:
Quote:
I am very disappointed in this day and age that society promotes this type of action, and I can't even go and enjoy a family sporting event without having blatant exploitation of girls thrown in my and everyone else's face.
|
I end up at hockey games a couple of times a year and I always enjoy when the Fire and Ice Girls flit around out there. In light of our recent discussion on sexism, though, what do you guys think of the F&I Girls? Personally, I like it. Maybe it's sexist, but I hope it stays.

Seems only fair, there are also a few dozen young men in peak physical condition on the ice as well. So the ladies have their eye candy, and the men have theirs.

Is there a difference between the F&I Girls and the Stamps Cheerleaders?

Perhaps some particularly undesirable males to work the shovels in front of the oppositions bench and net. While only adding to the issue at hand, I still like it.
I'd also add that Edmonton has been using men for a number of years.

Cheerleaders and F&I girls will be gone someday soon. Personally I feel bad for looking at them since most of the F&I girls look underage.

The cheerleader handbook from the Buffalo Bills is horrible.

The F&I girls are always an interesting point to me. They aren't dressed inappropriately and they do serve a purpose that is greater than titilation, but they ALSO serve that purpose. Sexist? I don't know. Are they? Are they simply being treated like objects? And not like women at all?

But they don't need to dress that way to do their job. In fact, I am sure that at the last Flames game I went to, 4-5 yrs ago, there were also male on the ice aiding the F&I girls. IIRC, those fellas were wearing track suits.

Enjoyed reading the cat fight comments at the end of the article more than the article.

I know a F&I girl (good friends with my gf) and one of the Stampeder cheerleaders.
The F&I girl just likes the easy money, getting to go to the games and thinks it's fun. Shes 21. The Stamps cheerleaders are all dancers who love what they do and the one I know is 24 or 25.
So who are you to judge?
Man this forum is getting RIDICULOUS with this PC, "love to be offended" attitude. I feel like I'm sitting in my intro to sociology class.
One of the Stamps cheerleaders I met just did playboy. You should track her down and burn her at the stake.

The cheerleader I knew did it for coke money.
Polak, at one point I had the same view as you. I now have an 11 yr daughter and my view(s) have/are changing.
