Default White Van speaker scam variation. This time with TV's!!

Got approached by a couple of young dudes in a van (white, just for traditions sake I suppose) as I was loading up my groceries at Superstore, 'hey you want a flat screen TV?'
I knew it was a scam but the TV part threw me for a second but its the same old 'the warehouse gave me an extra TV and I just want to sell it before I go back to work' line, used to be cheap speakers, now its cheap TV's

Just a heads up if you get approached, the TV's probably with 50 bucks and they will try to get you to spend 300 or so by telling you its a 3000 dollar set.

My buddy got taken by the speaker scam about 15 years ago when we were (slightly younger) morons. I didn't even realize it was a scam until a couple years ago. I keep meaning to ask him if he ever figured it out.

Someone tried this on me once at the Coop by Heritage. Why would I want to buy speakers I don't need from a couple of greaseballs in a white Savana van.

My friend got taken by one of those, too. He was super excited when he brought them over, becuase they were very close in name to a real brand. I think it was Acoustic Reasearch. Once I told them they were ####, and he plugged them in and realized he had been taken, he was livid. He somehow tracked the kid(well, younger, under 25) down, went to his house, and yelled at him until the kids dad showed up and made him gave the money back. Some scams never change...

These speakers were soooo bad. I'm not sure how you make something sound that bad, but man, awful.

The people that need this warning, deserve to be scammed.

The phone scams where they claim Microsoft can see your computer and it's transmitting viruses so seems to have legs as I still get them on my work line weekly from those India call centers. I've had good fun with them wasting their time but they just won't take my number off their list.

I got scammed 15 years ago. Well I still used the speakers for 5 years and they were good but paid $500 for $100 speakers.

I will totally mess around with them if I am approached again.

Did the tv boxes have an MSRP printed on them? I can't wait until they start showing up on Kijiji. The speaker scam stuff has been there and in local pawn shops for years. Here's an old Crimestoppers report from when some "speakermen" got robbed of their "high end electronics", JVR and Bach n Odin.

I used to be fairly creative with them. Talking with a hideous actor. Pretending to be a phone sex operator. Faking a heart attack on the phone when they gave me the bad news about my computer.

But eventually I decided to skip the per-amble and try to destroy their hearing with a very loud air horn.

Just wondering how a TV can be worth $50? I know with the speakers they were either worth nothing (didn't work), or were worth what lower priced speakers cost. But seeing as there really aren't any $50 TVs out there, just wondering how you came up with that number.

Sorry, not trying to be abrasive. You just got me thinking.

If I were a white van speaker guy, I would have a WiFi jammer in the van so nobody could look it up on their phone, then have a fake website on my tablet or brochures to show the product off.

I think its an indication as to how cheap TV's have become, Costco sells 40 inch no name Chinese ones for 200 bucks, I have no doubt it will be something similar, older 720dps LCD's or the like.

How do they show that the screen actually works? they must have a mobile power supply or I suppose they run it off of the white van's battery.
