This is really sad news. ATCQ were the group that got me into hip hop. RIP Funky Diabetic.

I lost count to how many times I listened to Midnight Marauders. Man this death really sucks. Even though Tribe haven't been together for a long time it was nice to imagine that they could've came together and put out one last album. Now that wil never happen . R.I.P Phife

They were highly influential for their ability to appeal across genres. They were often one of a few hip hop groups that you would see at festivals more geared towards rock music fans. It's more common today than it was back in the 1990s, partly because of them.

Phife dropping a Mario Lemieux reference back in 93 is still one of my all-time favorite name drops in a song.

"Large Professor in the house, you know how we do
I skate on your crew, like Mario Lemieux"

Diabetes his whole life, sad it had to end so soon.

Sad news for sure. Such a great emcee.

For anybody interested, Calgary's own Dirty Needles crew put out a great ATCQ mix. Here's the link:

I remember the hype back in 1996 around Beats, Rhymes and Life dropping. Went to a house party and people put it on repeat all night. I also remember it being in the middle of the coast beef, and the Wu-Tang are Gods era. Although that album was considered one of the weakest of their discography, it holds a special place as I remember the very summer night in 1996 we listened to that album and debated hip hop in the middle of the golden era.

I then got to see their farewell tour with Beastie Boys in 1998 in Vancouver on Hello Nasty tour. Just an amazing group and personal talent. Wish Q-Tip would have been more receptive to a reunion but it never happened. Now it will be just a legend that ended nearly 20 years ago.

RIP Phife, that raspy voice belongs in a music hall of fame. One of the greats.
